On my recent stay at the Westin Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage, I happened by one the latest events for car lovers in the desert, the Desert Classic Concours d?Elegance. This annual celebration of the automobile revealed beauty, art, design and engineering, It is a 3 ? day motorsport event that is trying to find its place in desert alongside such signature car events as Keith McCormick?s twice yearly Classic Car Auction.

This desert car show exhibits 250 classic cars that featured exquisite examples of automotive excellence. The Westin Mission Hills Resort & Spa in the heart of Rancho Mirage is the place where this magnificent event took place providing world-class hospitality on 45 acres of lushly landscaped grounds that invite the warm sunshine. With all the visual candy that surrounded me, it was enjoyable to dig into some the fine food and beverages that were providing among the soft listening music.

Each of the days brought a different aspect of the event to be experienced. It started out with the Tour Classique on Friday at Chuckwalla Raceway. One driver, one old time race car on a 2,7 mile length track equipped 40 feet wide grand prix style. Along with watching the circuit run, there was also a welcome breakfast and lunch provided.

Saturday provided the tour which gave an up close look at the stunning classic cars that were on display. Along with viewing such cars as a 52? Porsche Roadster, 68? Shelby Mustang or a 56? Panorama Coupe, I also had the pleasure at speaking with the owners on the nuts and bolts that go along with these fabulous machines. I then was able to watch and listen to the vroooms and purrs of the engines as they vehicles began to leave to tour through the Coachella valley. The Tour concluded at the Cuistot restaurant where I was able to view the car displays again.

An opening reception at the Westin, kicked off the event. This VIP reception was limited to VIP event guests, Concours judges, participants and volunteers. Known as the highlight of the weekend festivities, this casual and relaxing reception offers a look at the rides of the Concours as well as the opportunity to meet the owners while enjoying fine food and beverage with music. It?s when party time comes to the desert. There is also the Vintage Car Auction that to place most of the afternoon. On Sunday, I had the opportunity to take part in the Concours d?Elegance at the Westin Mission Hills Resort & Spa. Such rides as a 1930 Cadillac Fleetwood or a 1969 Ferrari 365 GT along with a pre-war 1936 Bugatti type 57 Cabriolet. The sights were incredible and the visuals of chrome and steel sparkled through the day in an array of fantastic colors. I then perused some of the up-scale vendors that littered the event with their collectible art, jewelry, and watches.

This delightful event was time well spent. In the end I felt like there were just so many great cars that I didn?t have the opportunity to see which makes it worth going again. It is definitely an up and coming classic car event, worth a look on your next Palm Springs vacation.
