Police confront Oakland protesters with tear gas (Reuters)

OAKLAND, Calif (Reuters) ? Police in riot gear clashed with protesters in Oakland on Thursday, firing tear gas to disperse demonstrators lingering in the streets after a day of mostly peaceful rallies against economic inequality and police brutality.

The confrontation, which erupted after midnight, appeared aimed at preventing the protesters from expanding their foothold in the streets around a public plaza that has become a hub for demonstrations in the northern California city.

More than 200 officers, some of them ferried in aboard buses, lined up shoulder to shoulder and donned gas masks, then declared the crowd to be an unlawful assembly and fired volleys of tear gas as protesters turned and ran.

A few activists paused to pick up canisters and hurl them back at officers as they fled, while others threw rocks.

"This was peaceful until you came!" some protesters shouted at police. Police later charged into the plaza with batons and more tear gas to push protesters farther into center of the square.

The clashes in Oakland, which shot to the forefront of nationwide anti-Wall Street protests after a former Marine was badly injured in a rally last week, followed a day of rallies that drew some 5,000 activists at their peak and shuttered the busy Port of Oakland but failed to grind the city to a halt.

At least one protester was carried away with an injury to his leg, and another who had been placed under arrest, his hands bound behind him, lay on the ground with blood streaming down his face.

About three dozen activists were arrested, lined up seated along a street curb in plastic wrist restraints as they waited to be taken away by police.

The anti-Wall Street activists, who complain bitterly about a financial system they believe benefits mainly corporations and the wealthy, had aimed to disrupt commerce with a special focus on banks and other symbols of corporate America.

The clash with police turned into a tense stand-off as most of the protesters had retreated to Frank Ogawa Plaza, the large outdoor square next to City Hall that has been a hub of the so-called Occupy Oakland movement.

Police, meanwhile, formed a cordon along the northern perimeter of the plaza about a block or two from its edge. Other officers branched off toward other pockets of protesters outside the plaza.

Many of the street lights in the area suddenly went dark as the confrontation unfolded, but it was not clear whether they were turned off or were knocked out by a power disruption.

PORT CLOSED

On Wednesday evening, an official said maritime operations at the Oakland port, which handles about $39 billion a year in imports and exports, had been "effectively shut down."

Protesters, who streamed across a freeway overpass to gather in front of the port gates, stood atop tractor-trailers stopped in the middle of the street.

Others climbed onto scaffolding over railroad tracks as a band played a version of the Led Zeppelin song "Whole Lotta Love," using amplifiers powered by stationary bike generators.

"Maritime area operations will resume when it is safe and secure to do so," the port said in a statement. A port spokesman said officials hoped to reopen the facility on Thursday morning.

The atmosphere at the protests turned tense well before police moved in when a protester was apparently struck by a car in downtown Oakland. Acting Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan later said the pedestrian was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Small groups were later seen in local TV images running through the streets, trying to start small fires or climbing on top of moving television news vans.

At one point, several people appeared to force open the driver's-side door of a news van, but after a few tense moments the door closed again and the van drove away safely.

Windows were smashed at several Oakland banks and a Whole Foods market, with pictures of the damage posted on Twitter. Jordan blamed the vandalism and unruliness on a small group he identified as anarchists.

The demonstrations centered at Frank Ogawa Plaza, scene of a tug-of-war last week between police who cleared an Occupy Oakland encampment there and protesters who sought to return, and ultimately succeeded in doing so.

Protesters, prior to marching on the port, had also blocked the downtown intersection of 14th street and Broadway, where ex-Marine Scott Olsen was wounded during a clash with police on the night of October 25.

It was the wounding of Olsen, a former Marine turned peace activist who suffered a serious head injury during protests last week, that seemed to galvanize protesters and broadened their complaints to include police brutality.

He remains in an Oakland hospital in fair condition.

Protest organizers say Olsen, 24, was struck by a tear gas canister fired by police. Jordan opened an investigation into the incident but has not said how he believes Olsen was hurt.

Mexico army rescues 15 kidnapped Honduran migrants (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexico's Defense Department says soldiers have rescued 15 Honduran migrants who had been kidnapped and were being held in a house in Nuevo Laredo on the border with the United States.

The military says troops patroling in the Privada Esmeralda neighborhood on Monday detained a man who was watching over the migrants.

A statement Wednesday gives no other details of the rescue in Nuevo Laredo, which is across the border from Laredo, Texas.

Soldiers and federal police have been increasingly rescuing migrants kidnapped by drug cartels. Authorities say migrants are kidnapped for ransom or to be forced to work for the crime syndicates.

New research in the FASEB Journal suggests that tangles, 1 of the 2 main Alzheimer's markers, consist of proteins called neurofilaments and vimentin as well as the tau protein

Bethesda, MDScientists from the National Institutes of Health in the United States have made an important discovery that should forever change the scope and direction of Alzheimer's research. Specifically, they have discovered that the protein tangles which are a hallmark of the disease involve at least three different proteins rather than just one. The discovery of these additional proteins, called neurofilaments and vimentin, should help scientists better understand the biology and progression of the disease as well as provide additional drug discovery targets. This discovery was published in the November 2011 issue of the FASEB Journal (http://www.fasebj.org).

"Since neurofilaments are the predominant protein in nerve cells, our study suggests that we should refocus our research on the biology of these filamentous proteins in an effort to understand how they are normally regulated and deregulated in response to human aging," said Harish C. Pant, Ph.D., a senior researcher involved in the work from the Cytoskeletal Regulatory Protein Section of the Laboratory of Neurochemistry at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

To make their discovery, Pant and colleagues identified normal and abnormal proteins present in autopsy samples of the brains of Alzheimer's disease victims. Then they isolated and purified the tangles (which are knots of abnormally aggregated filaments that fill and compromise nerve cells) from the autopsy samples and compared their protein composition to age- and post mortem-matched samples of brains from patients who died of other causes, such as accidents. Through a combination of improved instrumentation and informatics, it was possible to resolve the mixture of proteins successfully and identify the novel Alzheimer's disease proteins. Previous research suggested that only one protein, called "tau," is present in these tangles.

"This is a breakthrough of great importance: tau is not the only target," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of the FASEB Journal. "Before this discovery, we approached these tangles as if they were woven of one piece of string. Now we know that there are at least three proteins involved, we're much closer to untangling the Alzheimer's web. Without question, discoveries like this bring us closer than ever to advanced Alzheimer's treatments, and it is a good example of why NIH funding is among the best investments our nation can make toward improving health and well being."

Jared Sullinger tops AP preseason All-America team (AP)

Jordan Taylor is in a class by himself on The Associated Press' preseason All-America team.

The guard from Wisconsin was the only senior on the team Monday. He was joined by four sophomores, including Ohio State's Jared Sullinger, a unanimous pick of the 65-member national media panel.

Harrison Barnes of North Carolina, Terrence Jones of Kentucky and Jeremy Lamb of Connecticut were the other sophomores.

The 6-foot-1 Taylor averaged 18.1 points and 4.7 assists last season in leading the Badgers to a 25-9 record, third place in the Big Ten and their 13th straight NCAA tournament appearance. He received 51 votes.

"I just hope he doesn't think he has to score 40 a game this year," coach Bo Ryan said. "I think we're going to be in trouble if he does. He doesn't. He wants to be even more consistent. He wants to be more inclusive with his teammates, maybe in transition. There are different things we're looking at in trying to get done with a different-sized team maybe on the floor."

The 6-9 Sullinger was one of the players who decided to pass on the NBA draft. His coach said an impending lockout had nothing to do with him returning.

"He knew what he was going to do from the time he got to Ohio State in the summer," Buckeyes coach Thad Matta said. "When he told me he was coming back, I said, 'Are you sure? Let's talk about this.' I want what's best for our players. He said, 'No, there's no need to do it, I'm coming back.'"

His return has Ohio State at No. 3 in the AP preseason Top 25, behind two schools also featuring the return of a star.

North Carolina was a runaway choice for No. 1, and Barnes was second to Sullinger in the voting with 63. The Tar Heels' entire front line is back after thinking about entering the draft.

The 6-8 Barnes was the first freshman selected to the preseason team, which started before the 1986-87 season. Many felt there was too much pressure on Barnes as the season started, and he did start to play more consistently once conference play began.

"Coming into last year, there was a lot of expectations, but we didn't know what to expect and we didn't know how things went," said Barnes, who averaged 15.7 points and 5.8 rebounds for an inexperienced North Carolina team. "There wasn't really anybody we could talk to on the team who had been through that. ... I think this year we kind of know what to expect. We're not looking at it as championship or bust. We're looking at it as go out and play the best basketball we can."

Jones, who received 33 votes, also thought about leaving for the NBA but he will be back for the Wildcats, who were No. 2 in the preseason Top 25. The 6-9 forward averaged 15.7 points and 8.8 rebounds last season as Kentucky reached the Final Four.

Lamb asserted himself as the season went on and became a key player in the Huskies' 11-game run to their third national championship. The 6-5 guard, who received 25 votes, averaged 11.1 points and 4.5 rebounds last season.

The last unanimous pick to the preseason All-America team was North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough before the 2008-09 season.

Besides Barnes, the other members of last season's preseason team were Jimmer Fredette of BYU, who went on to become national player of the year; JaJuan Johnson of Purdue, a first-team selection; Jacob Pullen of Kansas State, a third-team pick; and Kyle Singler of Duke, an honorable mention.

The other members of the postseason first team were Nolan Smith of Duke and Kemba Walker of Connecticut.

Buying Real Estate Within The Carolina | Article Tavern

Investing in real estate can seem a daunting, even though attractive, prospect to several persons. It seems like an fascinating and exciting way to make funds, and it is possible to picture yourself sitting inside a cigar bar, framed by dim woods, toasting your most recent profits with a great snifter of scotch (properly I?m sure I can). But you?ve heard lots of tales of persons receiving stuck with qualities, after which there is your buddy the investment banker who claims stocks far surpass real estate as investments. Real estate investment does have its very good and bad points, and we?re going to demystify them for you.

Because the age older stating goes, if you are considering purchasing a bit of genuine estate, you will wish to uncover the best location, location, location. The most significant factor in genuine estate is location. When seeking at different locations to invest in, appear at close by cities. I don?t like being far more than the usual one-and-a-half to 2 hour push from my investment properties. Utilize the U.S. Census data to ensure the population is growing, along with task growth and revenue. I also like to assessment the appreciation prices with the final 5 many years to ensure the region is not already overvalued. The next factor you will do is check out the region and obtain a really feel with the town. This is where your gut will tell you probably the most. Is there a decent downtown, , dining establishments, a library, and film theater? The final factor to appear at follows the foremost rule of economics: provide and desire. Bear in mind your population growth figures and appear through the region to see how quite a few houses are readily available. Check the permits department to see how quite a few apps have already been utilized for, and approved for new development. Uncover out the vacancy prices for rentals, something near to, or over 10% must elevate considerations. Research what similar properties are renting for.

Some locations to consider are / and Rock Hill in South Carolina; and , , and Greensboro in North Carolina. Also, Beaufort County in North Carolina where the oldest city of Bath is located. Don?t Neglect, do your research before investing anywhere!

When you?ve found a superb location, you?ll must decide what kind of house to buy. I like residential revenue qualities because everybody needs to reside somewhere. A duplex is good because it is possible to hire out 1 side and reside in the other. However, it?s got disadvantages because you?ll be forced to share the property, and reside close to your tenant. Just one household home has disadvantages because in the event you shed 1 tenant, it?s completely empty and you?re dropping funds. -family units are great because it?s uncommon that it is going to be fully empty, even though the more persons you hire to, the more problems you?ll need to deal with. I also prefer to locate the even worse residence in an up and coming location. You are able to repair it up and resell it for a profit, or preserve it to hire out. You are able to also get uncooked land with out any creating on it. Raw land is great because there is no creating to preserve and watch depreciate. You are able to subdivide it, and sell off items to create some fast profit. You are able to even hire the land to someone who desires to create a creating on it. At the end in the lease, the creating is yours!

If you?re planning on obtaining residential qualities and renting them out, there is no much better location to do it than inside a school city. Luckily, North Carolina and South Carolina are full of blossoming school towns. Just before you decide on a city, ensure the campus is created up of resident students, instead of commuters. You may appear in the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and believe it?s a terrific location to buy, but a closer appear will let you know most of the students commute. If 30% or much less in the students enrolled may be housed on campus, it?s properly really worth looking at. The decrease the much better. You might spend more for properties close to schools, but you will also get more hire. The supply of school housing is restricted as a result of zoning codes and the lack of readily available land. Inside the case of public schools, they ordinarily don?t possess the funds to create more housing. The need is expanding as a result of growing enrollments of both undergraduate and graduate students. School towns will also be turning into pretty well-liked with retirees, and don?t forget, professors also have to have housing. Attempt to get close to the school, so your tenants can stroll to school. A few of my favorite school towns incorporate, , and Columbia in South Carolina, and Charlotte, Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham in North Carolina. These towns are home towards the University of South Carolina at ; Bob Jones and Universities in and respectively; USC Columbia; the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Durham and Chapel Hill; and North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Each one of these locations have vibrant downtown which cater towards the universities by offering housing with the students.

Stosur beats Petrova in record match

- NEW YORK (Reuters) - Australian Sam Stosur beat Russian Nadia Petrova 7-6 6-7 7-5 to reach the last 16 of the U.S. Open in a three hour, 16 minute battle on Friday in the tournament's longest women's match of the tie-break era.

Ninth seed Stosur, a quarter-finalist in New York last year, had chances to close out a hard-fought tussle in the second set, but Petrova, the 24th seed, saved two match points and won the tiebreak 7-5 to force a third set.

Then it was Stosur's turn to rally back. Down a break in the third set, the Australian drew level at 4-4 with a service break in the eighth game.

A confident hold at love gave Stosur a 6-5 lead, and she finally finished off Petrova on her fifth match point to advance to a match against another Russian, 25th seed Maria Kirilenko.

Stosur, who saved four match points herself against Elena Dementieva last year to reach the quarters, ripped 48 winners but also made 44 unforced errors.
