Suicide bomber wounds prominent Pakistani militant

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (AP) ? A suicide bomber on Thursday attacked a prominent Pakistani militant commander in the country's northwest who is believed to have a nonaggression pact with the army, wounding him and killing seven people, officials said.

A few hours later, a U.S. drone fired a pair of missiles at a house several kilometers (miles) from the bombing site, killing three suspected militants, Pakistani intelligence officials said.

The suicide bomber attacked Maulvi Nazir in Wana, the main town in the South Waziristan tribal area, as he was arriving at an office he uses to meet with locals and hear their complaints, said the commander's spokesman, Maulana Ameer Nawaz. Nazir was not critically wounded, said Nawaz.

Nazir was one of over a dozen people wounded in the attack, said Pakistani intelligence officials and a local government administrator, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. They initially reported that three people died, but later raised the number to seven after some of the critically injured died of their wounds.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but suspicion is likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban, which has been waging a bloody insurgency against the government for the past several years and has jockeyed with Nazir for power in South Waziristan.

The tribal area was the Pakistani Taliban's main sanctuary until the army launched a large ground offensive in 2009 and pushed many of them out.

Nazir is widely believed to have cut a deal with the army ahead of the offensive that allowed him to stay in South Waziristan as long as he remained on the sidelines. The militant commander has in the past focused his fight against U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan, not against the Pakistani state.

Nazir had been running a secret campaign in recent weeks to push the Pakistani Taliban and foreign militants allied with them out of Wana and the surrounding areas, said intelligence officials.

Nawaz, the militant commander's spokesman, said the suicide bomber who attacked Nazir appeared to be a 15- or 16-year-old boy.

"The moment the chief got out of his vehicle, the boy ran toward him and detonated his explosives," Nawaz told The Associated Press by telephone.

Yar Mohammad, a resident of Wana who witnessed the attack, said the blast was huge.

"I'm seeing smoke everywhere," he said.

Nazir's fighters retaliated after the attack by killing two Pakistani Taliban militants in the main market in Wana, said intelligence officials. There were also reports of Nazir's fighters attacking Pakistani Taliban militants in the nearby village of Kari Kot, they said.

The house that was hit by a U.S. missile strike later Thursday was located in Sheen Warsak, another village near Wana, said intelligence officials. The identities of the suspected militants who were killed were not clear, said the officials.

The U.S. does not normally comment publicly about CIA drone attacks in Pakistan, but American officials have privately said that the strikes have killed senior Taliban and al-Qaida leaders and are a key counterterrorism tool.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) ? Bomb threats to 30 courthouses and other government buildings across Tennessee forced many to be evacuated Tuesday, including the federal building in Memphis, but authorities said no explosives were found.

Tennessee became the fourth state to deal with similar bomb hoaxes. One targeted 28 courthouses in Oregon and similar threats were reported in Nebraska and Washington this month.

Nine threats were reported in West Tennessee counties ? including the Memphis federal building ? seven in Middle Tennessee and 14 in East Tennessee, said Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security spokeswoman Dalya Qualls.

No arrests have been made in Tennessee and authorities had searched about 14 courthouses by Tuesday afternoon.

Jeremy Heidt, a spokesman for the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, said the threats were made by telephone to court clerk offices. "It's been going on all morning," said Heidt.

The threats to courthouses in Ashland City and Clinton were made by men.

"It was just a man's voice saying simply if this is the Cheatham County Courthouse you're about to be blown up, and it startled me. So I just said I'm sorry. I tried to get him to repeat himself and that's when it just cut off and I thought 'Oh my,'" Cheatham County deputy clerk Rebecca Nicholson told WTVF-TV.

Anderson County Clerk Jeff Cole told The Knoxville News Sentinel that a man's voice simply said "There's a bomb in the building" and hung up.

The FBI is working closely with state authorities and will pursue federal charges if necessary, said Joel Siscovic, the bureau's spokesman in Memphis.

The federal building in Memphis houses the federal court and offices for the Department of Justice, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen. It was cleared around 9 a.m. for a couple of hours while authorities checked it.

Police temporarily blocked a trolley line that ran by the federal building in Memphis and brought in a dog to search the building before letting people return around 11 a.m.

According to Memphis police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph, a woman called police around 8:30 a.m. and said she had information that someone was going to blow up the county criminal justice center, the federal building and a main U.S. Post Office in the city.

All three locations were searched and nothing was found, she said.

Fantastic On-Hand Resource: The Homeschooling Book of Lists

I rarely find home education materials in big-box bookstores, so you can imagine my surprise when this book jumped off the shelf and into my hands. Michael and Mary Leppert?s comprehensive The Homeschooling Book of Lists is a resource I consult quite regularly. And here?s why: it?s jam packed with information.

More than just another guide to homeschooling, The Homeschooling Book of Lists is a compendium of homeschooling resources, publishers, suppliers, publications, websites, and other references. It?s divided into five major sections:

  • Things to Consider Before Homeschooling
  • Homeschooling Models and Methods
  • Subjects and Lesson Plans
  • Homeschooling Resources
  • Getting Your Homeschooled Student into College

Each section then branches out into a wide variety of topics to explore and consider. For example, Part 4, Homeschooling Resources, comprises 20 different lists, such as:

  • Various religious resource lists
  • Ethnic resources
  • Boxed curricula
  • Homeschooling with nonelectric games
  • Special needs resources
  • Tutors and tutoring
  • Testing and test prep
  • Charter schools and independent study programs

Of course, any print materials that list website URLs run the risk that those addresses won?t always be valid. The same holds true for this manual. However, a simple Google search enabled me to find whatever I needed, so this really isn?t an issue.

I?m always on the lookout for new and different resources to enrich my children?s education, but I don?t have a lot of time to devote to this particular activity. The Homeschooling Book of Lists?makes it easy for me. In fact, ?my own copy of this handy reference tool for busy homeschooling families boasts highlighted and dog-eared pages ? and for good reason!

Retinal implant could let visually impaired 'see' Braille

32 min.

An "artificial eye" is still a long ways off, but researchers have made the low-resolution devices now available useful in a new way.?Instead of trying to replace vision entirely, they only "translate" text, presenting it to the user in a more familiar format: Braille.

Today's retinal implants are promising and allow people suffering from certain kinds of visual disability to see very rough shapes and contrasts. But with a resolution of only a few hundred total pixels, they are unable to display the world in anything but the lowest fidelity.

But replicating vision isn't just about the view. Sighted people take the ability to read things like?street signs and menus for granted, but not only is this difficult or impossible for most visually-impaired?people, there are relatively few accommodations available, as there are for things like crossing the street or using an ATM.

With this in mind, the team at Second Sight decided to modify?an Argus II retinal implant system, in which visual signals are presented to the retina in the form of electrical signals. They hooked the built-in camera up to software that translates text it sees into Braille, and then sent that signal on to be displayed by the implanted electrode arrays.

Low resolution isn't a problem for Braille, since letters are represented as dots in a three-by-two grid rather than using the lines and curves of standard glyphography. In testing, they would show up to four letters at a time ? not efficient for reading longer sentences, but?enough to quickly differentiate between "left" and "right," "open" and "closed," or "men" and "women."

Their test subject?had limited success with the system: Already a user of Braille and the Argus II implant, he was able to identify letters correctly 89 percent of the time. But as the length of the word grew, success rate fell.

Still, any improvement over the previous system, in which the highly pixelated image could barely show letters or words at all, would surely be welcome to users of the implant. While for reading books and articles, Braille is much faster, that option doesn't exist for many signs and other pieces of writing.

At the moment, retinal implants are still something of a rarity; while hundreds of thousands could potentially benefit from the technology, they are still in a relatively early stage of development and have not yet entered widespread clinical testing. But whenever they start to be prescribed to the general population, having helpful alternative modes like this one could be very important to the people for whom they are intended.

The paper describing the research, "Reading visual braille with a retinal prosthesis," appeared recently?in "Frontiers in Neuroprosthetics." The lead author is?Thomas Lauritzen of Second Sight, in collaboration with colleagues from?Brigham Young University and two French vision research institutes.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBC?News Digital. His personal website is?coldewey.cc.

Enough already about stupid, lazy real estate agents

So I read this article about how stupid and lazy real estate agents are, and it caused me to work harder and to be smarter!

Actually, it did no such thing.

I have to wonder if these articles ever inspire anyone. Am I the only agent who is tired of reading about how bad real estate agents are, and all of the things we do wrong?

I can't help but think we could all benefit from some positive role models, some new ideas, and even a little encouragement now and then.

Criticism doesn't seem to be improving the industry or I would not see the same complaints, year after year.

I have tried to explain

why we don't answer the phone
, but I don't think anyone got it.

Maybe articles about stupid lazy agents don't

apply
to me, and I shouldn't take them personally.

But who DO these articles apply to, and are those people reading them? What is the point of just pointing out our many deficiencies without offering solutions? If I concede that we are stupid and lazy, who cares? And what are you going to do about it?

More importantly, if we are so bad, why have we not been replaced by technology? Our industry is in turmoil, but real estate agents are the ones who pay to support the technology that buyers and sellers want.

We need more heroes at all levels. Not just people who run companies or lead teams, but agents who are out there working with clients. It's not always easy, or glamorous. But we can't all be stupid and lazy. There must be some ambitious and smart agents out there.

I don't know too many lazy people who have what it takes to be an independent contractor. It means looking for work everyday, and trust me -- that isn't something that lazy people like to do. It's anything but easy.

The agents who work smarter instead of harder must really look lazy. So do the agents who only work 40 hours a week.

As for stupidity, our critics may have a point. There are days when I really question my choices.

There are easier ways to make a living than selling real estate. There are no benefits, and

health insurance
is so expensive that it makes being an agent scary.

The IRS doesn't make things easy for us either. Most days it seems like the universe is screaming, GET A JOB!

I have read some excellent advice for agents from people who have never sold a piece of property. Usually they have some credentials in business or technology, or both.

But does simply having purchased a

home
qualify you to give advice? How can a buyer who worked with an incompetent agent be considered an expert, for example, when there are so many wonderful agents to choose from, and they are so easy to find?

There are people who have nothing but praise for their agent. Some people are better than others at hiring

a good agent, or any kind of contractor.

There are also people who will screw up any home purchase or sale, even when they work with the best agent. Agents represent others -- we don't make decisions for them.

Of course, some of the criticism of agents comes from agents themselves. There are always "other" agents to complain about.

As someone who's spent much of her life working for large corporations, I can tell you there are no industries or occupations where you will not be exposed to co-workers who are lazy, stupid or incompetent -- even if those co-workers have advanced degrees or professional designations.

The best way to drive yourself nuts is to worry about how others do their jobs. It's best to stay focused on our own job performance.

Complaining about the behavior of stupid lazy agents doesn't seem to be helping the profession or the people in it. It's demoralizing. Maybe it's time to try something different. Maybe a better way to change the industry is to lead and teach by example.

Some experts don't offer solutions because they don't have any. Some of those who criticize agents don't set a good example by being professional or returning phone calls themselves. Their own companies could use better management and marketing, and it shows.

Raising the bar begins by setting a good example with our own actions.
