Jeno Paulucci, pizza roll architect, dies at 93 (AP)

DULUTH, Minn. ? Jeno Paulucci, a Minnesota business icon whose restaurant ventures included a company that popularized the finger food known as pizza rolls, has died. He was 93.

Dougherty Funeral Home in Duluth confirmed the death Thursday night to The Associated Press. Paulucci's daughter Cindy Paulucci Selton tells the Duluth News-Tribune (http://bit.ly/rW7fP3) he died Thursday morning at his home, just four days after his wife, Lois, passed away.

In 1944, Paulucci founded Duluth-based Chun King, which sold a line of canned Chinese food. He eventually sold that company to R.J. Reynolds Food Inc.

He'd become the first chairman of R.J. Reynolds Food Co. before establishing Jeno's Inc., which specialized in the finger-food snacks called pizza rolls. It grew to be Duluth's largest employer and was sold to Pillsbury in 1985.

New law in Malaysia to regulate demonstrations (AP)

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia ? Malaysia's government is introducing a new law to regulate public demonstrations amid rising pressure to improve civil liberties ahead of national elections expected next year.

The Peaceful Assembly Bill nevertheless falls short of demands by opposition and human rights groups for authorities to allow street demonstrations.

Malaysia's de facto law minister Nazri Aziz told Parliament on Tuesday that the bill will require organizers of demonstrations to provide police with advance notice of at least 30 days.

The planned law forbids street protests. Officials have repeatedly urged demonstrators to gather in stadiums or confined venues to avoid public disruptions.

Tour operator Thomas Cook in financial trouble (AP)

LONDON ? Industry analysts and anxious travelers expressed fears Tuesday for the survival of Britain's venerable tour operator Thomas Cook, after the company, which took more than 22 million people on holidays in the latest year, revealed its financial problems had worsened.

Shares in Europe's second-largest tour operator lost three-fourths of their already depressed value after the company said it was seeking new agreements with its main creditors, barely a month after announcing it had negotiated new funding arrangements to carry it through the slow winter months.

The company insisted flights would leave as usual and that it was taking new bookings, but Britons who have bought holidays through the firm were anxious.

Jamila Juma-Ware, 27, who has booked a holiday in Tenerife in the next three weeks for herself and her mother, said she was "praying it's going to be all right ... but I'm not confident."

Several small British travel firms have gone under since the global economic crisis hit in 2008, but Thomas Cook is an industry giant, and a fixture of Britain's main streets.

"There are a lot of small independent travel agents around here, but I said I'd rather just book it through someone like Thomas Cook because they're big and there's more of a guarantee they won't go bust," Juma-Ware said. "And then this week this happens. "

Thomas Cook is, like many airlines and tour operators, suffering from weak consumer demand as Europe's financial crisis has people worried about their jobs.

Unrest in Tunisia ? normally the top winter destination for French travelers ? and Egypt, flooding in Bangkok and disappointing sales in Russia have all added to the pressure on the company.

Analysts said the financial troubles could scare away customers, darkening the firm's prospects.

"Legitimate questions will be asked as to whether Thomas Cook can survive long-term," said James Hollins, analyst at Evolution Securities. He added that he believed the company could pull through on the strength of businesses outside Britain, but "a more flexible financial structure and massive turnaround are required."

Thomas Cook Group PLC shares were down almost 75 percent at 10.41 pence in afternoon trading in London. On July 1, shares had closed at 134.5 pence.

Thomas Cook was due to report annual earnings for 2010-11 on Thursday, but it has put that off indefinitely "as a result of deterioration of trading in some areas of the business, and of its cash and liquidity position since its year end."

Sam Weihagen, Thomas Cook's interim chief executive, insisted it was business as usual: "Flights are leaving on schedule, shops are open and we're taking bookings."

Weihagen said people who book package holidays would be protected by the Air Travel Organizers' Licensing insurance program which is funded by contributions from travel companies. However, those who book only flights are advised to buy their own travel insurance.

The group has previously announced plans to reduce its fleet of 41 aircraft to 35, and it hopes to raise 200 million pounds ($312 million) by selling assets including its stake in Britain's part-privatized air traffic control service.

Wyn Ellis, analyst at Numis Securities, said Thomas Cook's announcement could frighten new customers and alarm suppliers. The company, he said, "faces a difficult near-term future which could lead to significant loss of market share."

The company takes its name from the cabinetmaker Thomas Cook, who had a flash of inspiration while walking to a temperance meeting in 1841 to use the railways to help promote abstinence from alcohol.

Cook's first venture was to charter a train which carried about 500 passengers in open coaches on a 12-mile round trip.

"Thus was struck the keynote of my excursions, and the social idea grew up on me," Cook later recorded.

He organized more trips for temperance societies and Sunday schools. He took his business a step further in 1845 by arranging a trip to Liverpool, which included a 60-page booklet in the price of the ticket.

The International Exhibition in Paris in 1855 inspired Cook to organize a trip to the continent. Ten years later, he was organizing railway tours in North America.

Protein Might Ward Off Afternoon Snooze

60-Second Mind60-Second Mind | Mind & Brain

Glucose can block brain cell secretion of orexin, which keeps us alert. But amino acids can stop that block. Christie Nicholson reports.

The other afternoon I hit a classic mid-afternoon slump. Sleepy and sluggish, I grabbed for a bit of chocolate. But I probably should have had egg whites or maybe a piece of steak. Because a recent study in mice has found that it?s protein, not sugar, that provides the perk.

Brain cells called orexin cells secrete a stimulant that makes us energetic and tells the body to burn calories. If the cells? activity decreases, narcolepsy or sudden sleepiness, is the result. The work is published in the journal Neuron. [Mahesh M. Karnani et al, Activation of Central Orexin/Hypocretin Neurons by Dietary Amino Acids]

Scientists marked orexin cells in mice brains so they would fluoresce. Then they tracked the cells? activity after feeding the mice different kinds of food.

Turns out that glucose blocks the function of the orexin cells. This effect might be the main reason for the desired post-lunch siesta. But the researchers also found that amino acids stop the glucose action, keeping the cells active and the mice alert. So next time I get that 3 p.m. slow down, I?ll have an egg. If I?m alert enough to remember.

After dropping to 30th in Baseball America?s rankings following the Greinke and Marcum deals, the farm system rallied in 2011 and showed some promise for the future.

The Brewers won?t necessarily have openings for them, but Green, outfielders Logan Schafer and Caleb Gindl and righthander Michael Fiers have proven themselves in Triple-A and could help at the major league level in 2012. Righthander Wily Peralta, the orgnization?s No. 1 prospect, allowed just seven runs in five Triple-A starts at the end of the season and isn?t far behind.

Branson's Virgin to buy bailed-out Northern Rock (AP)

LONDON ? The British government is selling mortgage lender Northern Rock, the country's first victim of the credit crisis, to Richard Branson's Virgin Money.

Virgin Money, which is part of the wider Virgin Group, is paying 747 million pounds ($1.2 billion) on closing but there are provisions for the government to receive up to 1 billion pounds in total, the Treasury said Thursday. Virgin Money has promised that it will not lay off any more employees and will maintain the full branch network for at least three years.

"It was clear to us that this was the best deal for the British taxpayer, we were getting more money back than any other deal on the table," said Treasury chief George Osborne.

He said the sale would also increase competition in the British banking sector, which is dominated by four large banks.

The deal drew some criticism, however, because the sale price was less than the 1.4 billion pounds that taxpayers had invested in the bank.

"I'm very concerned about whether we are getting really good value for the taxpayer," said Mark Field, a lawmaker in the Conservative Party, which is Osborne's party too.

Ed Miliband, the leader of the opposition Labour Party, also said there will be "serious questions asked about the deal done to sell Northern Rock today, and in particular about the losses to the taxpayer."

Northern Rock's funding crisis in late 2007 gave Britain shocking images of desperate depositors lining up to withdraw their money from the company. The previous government nationalized the bank in February 2008 in the face of opposition from Osborne, and guaranteed the security of savings deposits.

The sale includes 75 branches and 2,100 staff, 1 million customers, retail deposits of 16 billion pounds and a mortgage book of 14 billion pounds.

Virgin Money was founded in 1995 and has around three million customers. The purchase of Northern Rock is funded by a consortium led by Virgin Group and W.L. Ross & Co., a turnaround specialist.

"Banking in the U.K. needs some fresh ideas and an injection of new competition," Branson said. "I'm delighted we will get the chance to work with the loyal staff of Northern Rock to create a new force in the market."

Before the bank was nationalized, Virgin Money had made an offer in 2008 to take over Northern Rock but it was rejected by the then government as too risky and too expensive.

The sale includes provisions for an addition 50 million pounds cash to be paid to the government six months after completion, and up to 230 million pounds if there is a profitable flotation or sale within five years.

The government last year split Northern Rock into two businesses: Northern Rock PLC, which Virgin Money is buying, and Northern Rock (Asset Management) PLC which holds a portfolio of the riskiest loans.

The government plans to wind down the asset management unit over time to repay 50 billion pounds advanced by the Treasury.

Northern Rock proved to be just a small part of the sums paid out by government to save the banking sector from collapse. Taxpayers still hold 83 percent of Royal Bank of Scotland and about 40 percent of Lloyds Banking Group.
