Dispatches From the Republican National Convention

Read the rest of Slate?s coverage from the GOP convention.

For those who didn?t think that Mitt Romney has had to overcome obstacles: Clint Eastwood. The actor?s 12-minute turn onstage at the Republican Convention was rambling and distracting. He spoke to an empty chair in which he pretended the president sat. A few times he pretended the president had suggested he and Romney have intercourse with themselves. Obama spokesperson Ben Labolt suggested that, as counter-programming, the Democrats next week would have Salvador Dali. President Obama got in on the fun by tweeting a picture of himself sitting in the Roosevelt Room chair. (This seat?s taken.) The convention that had seemed snakebit at the start, with Hurricane Isaac and tropical storm Todd Akin, appeared to be ending on the same cursed note.

But after the unplanned interlude, Romney made his case as a fix-it man who would return America to its first principles after its fling with the exciting, promising, but ultimately disappointing incumbent. It was a time for more realistic goals. ?President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans and heal the planet,? said Romney. ?My promise is to help you and your family.?

Romney made a promise, but the test of the speech is whether people believe it. Ann Romney talked about trust. Did he garner the trust people need to have to hand him the presidency? Mitt Romney?s election has always relied on a two-part formula. Voters needed to feel disappointment in the president and feel like Romney has a plan. Part 1 was a gift waiting for any Republican nominee who could make it to Tampa. Romney gave a perfectly fine speech, but there were no breakthroughs on that second task. The race feels like it is going to return to the hard-fought bitter contest it was before Romney entered the Tampa Bay Times Forum and without much momentum for the slog ahead.

Romney entered the hall and walked the red carpet through the crowd as if he were a president about to deliver the State of the Union. He shook hands, pointed at friends, and stopped to hug Sen. Orrin Hatch, who earlier in the evening had told me about Romney ?crawling in bed to cuddle his wife? when she had breast cancer. Romney didn?t get to the cuddling, but part of his speech was intended to give voters an inroad to who he is. He talked about his father, the Michigan governor whom they called ?brick? because he was so immovable. He told stories about unconditional love, his own parenting, and his love for his wife. The best line was: ?If you ask Ann and I what we?d give to break up just one more fight between the boys, or wake up in the morning and discover a pile of kids asleep in our room. Well, every mom and dad knows the answer to that.?

It was all done with a relatively light touch. The more powerful pitches were given from friends, fellow Mormons, and colleagues. A well-produced film should just run on a permanent website somewhere. Romney made a direct appeal to women voters by talking about the number of women he had put in top posts while he was governor of Massachusetts. He also tried to help disaffected Obama voters feel good about leaving the man who once had so much promise. For stretches of the speech, Romney acted almost as a psychologist identifying a shared national disappointment with Obama. ?Four years ago, I know that many Americans felt a fresh excitement about the possibilities of a new president,? he said before outlining all the ways in which the promises had not panned out. It was a way to use detail to show that he understood the travails of the common man. ?What could you do? Except work harder, do with less, try to stay optimistic. Hug your kids a little longer; maybe spend a little more time praying that tomorrow would be a better day.?

Then he turned his psychologist?s talents on the president. ?The president hasn?t disappointed you because he wanted to. The president has disappointed America because he hasn?t led America in the right direction.? Not a bad guy, just not up to the job.

The most devastating attack on Obama was his claim that there?s ?something wrong with the kind of job he?s done as president when the best feeling you had was the day you voted for him.? That line, plus the image Paul Ryan?s speech conjured the night before of a young Obama voter staring up at the ceiling, will live past the convention.

There was a curious inconsistency that undermined the Obama critique though. Romney said, ?He took office without the basic qualification that most Americans have and one that was essential to his task. He had almost no experience working in a business.? If this lack of business experience is the grand failure at the heart of the Obama presidency, then why did Romney pick Paul Ryan, who has no such experience himself?

The 2012 race for the presidency has felt stuck for months. Obama is weighed down by the economy, and Romney cannot close the deal. That was the dynamic before the Republican Convention and it?s the same afterward.

Exclusive: Walmart tests iPhone item scanning at Arkansas store

Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:45pm EDT

(Reuters) - Walmart Stores Inc is testing a "Scan & Go" system that would allow shoppers to scan items using their iPhones and then quickly pay at a self-checkout counter.

Earlier this week, Walmart invited employees with Apple Inc iPhones to participate in a test at a Walmart supercenter in Rogers, Arkansas, near the company's headquarters, according to a form on the Survey Monkey website (here).

While self-checkout aisles are common at many stores, the ability to scan items with one's mobile phone while shopping is not a typical process. Supervalu Inc's Jewel-Osco chain once let shoppers use hand-held scanners and then enter that information at the checkout to pay, but that test ended years ago.

A push to get other participants, including Walmart employees' friends and family, appeared to have also been emailed this week by someone from the company's @WalmartLabs team, but could not be verified on Friday afternoon.

"We're continually testing new and innovative ways to serve customers and enhance the shopping experience in our stores," said Walmart spokesman David Tovar.

U.N. rights expert condemns Israeli ruling on Corrie death

GENEVA (Reuters) - A U.N. investigator condemned an Israeli court on Thursday for clearing the military of blame for the death of American activist crushed by an army bulldozer, calling it a "victory for impunity".

The ruling handed down on Tuesday on the civil suit brought by the family of Rachel Corrie was part of a pattern of decisions exonerating Israeli military actions and political leaders, said Richard Falk, United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories.

"The judge's decision represents a defeat for justice and accountability, and a victory for impunity for the Israeli military," Falk said in a statement issued in Geneva.

Corrie's family accused Israel of intentionally and unlawfully killing their 23-year-old daughter in March 2003, launching a civil case in the northern city of Haifa after a military investigation found the army was not responsible.

Corrie had joined activists trying to stop the Israeli army from demolishing houses in the southern Gaza town of Rafah during a Palestinian uprising. The family has said it will appeal the ruling.

Judge Oded Gershon said the death was a "regrettable accident" and invoked a clause that absolved the army because the incident had happened during a wartime situation.

But Falk said that the decision "flies directly in the face of the Geneva Conventions, which impose on an occupying power an unconditional obligation to protect the civilian population".

As an aid worker, Corrie was entitled to protection by occupying forces and the house demolition appeared to violate the pact's prohibition on targeting civilian property, he said.

"This is a sad outcome, above all for the Corrie family ... but also for the rule of law and the hope that an Israeli court would place limits on the violence of the state, particularly in relation to innocent and unarmed civilians in an occupied territory," he said.

Falk, an American expert on international law serving as an independent U.N. expert since 2008, is a vocal critic of Israel, accusing it of crimes against humanity for its blockade of Gaza.

Falk, who is Jewish, was detained and turned back from Israel in 2008, forcing him to abort a planned mission to Gaza - a deportation denounced by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

He reports to the U.N. Human Rights Council, whose June/July session was boycotted by Israel's delegation, which accuses the 47-member forum of bias. Its latest investigation into Israeli practices is into whether Jewish settlements in the Palestinian territories violate human rights law.

Haier's Eye-Controlled Display Could Be the Future of Super-Lazy TV Watching [Television]

Why spend the effort messing around using a Wiimote-like remote, or even shouting at the TV, to get it to change channel, when you can just stare at what you want and blink to select? Well, that's Haier's theory anyway, and, amazingly, it actually works. More »

Indians walk past a shop named "Hitler" in Ahmedabad, India, on Wednesday.

By NBC News staff

The owner of an Indian men's clothing store whose name has sparked a row?in Ahmedabad city in the western state of Gujarat said he only recently learned why the name Hitler would disturb people, the?AFP news agency reported.?

"I didn't know how much the name would disturb people," Rajesh Shah?told AFP. "It was only when the store opened I learned Hitler had killed six million people."

The store opened 10 days ago, boasting a storefront that spells out "Hitler" in big letters and a swastika as the dot on the "i."

"We had put up a cloth banner for over a month saying, 'Hitler opening shortly,' no one objected to the name then," Shah told The Times of India.

He added that to him Hitler was just the nickname given to his business partner's grandfather, who was known for his "strict nature."

"Frankly, till the time we applied for the trademark permission, I had only heard that Hitler was a strict man. It was only recently that we read about Hitler on the internet," Shah told The Times of India.?

Shah said he cannot afford to change the name after spending his money on the original branding effort, but said he'd be willing to change it if he were compensated.?

"Youngsters need to be told of the atrocities that [Adolf] Hitler committed and the millions who were killed in gas chambers more than 70 years ago," he added.

Do You Believe that Marriage's Biggest Challenges Can Be Good ...

Money problems are the number one reason marriages end in divorce. ?Everyone knows this, and many have witnessed it. ?The finances in your marriage have the potential to be your biggest obstacle to having an awesome marriage. ?I?m convinced every marriage has dealt with this obstacle regardless how much money they have.

My marriage is no different. ?I can truly say money has been our biggest obstacle to date. ?However, it has not been an obstacle we have let come between us.

Money Problems Can Bring You Closer

True story. ?2004 was one of the most challenging years for our family. ?At the time our family was made up my wife, me, ?and our three year-old daughter (she turned four in August that year). ?In that year alone, we moved 6 times in a period of 7 months. ?We were basically homeless, and living in the homes of family and friends. ?In most of those places, our family shared one bedroom.

We went from two regular incomes with some pretty good benefits and financial perks to two very inconsistent incomes with no benefits and zero financial perks. ?And we had no idea when it would end. Yes, it was a huge obstacle and one that has destroyed many marriages. ?But we came out stronger.

What Doesn?t Kill You Makes You Stronger

It could have been easy for either of us to point fingers and lay blame (probably easier for my wife). ?I don?t remember that happening one time. ?I also do not remember ever discussing divorce. ?We rallied around some of the very principles we established early in our marriage and stood by them. ?Together, we fought poverty, homelessness, depression and any and everything that came against our marriage!

How We Did It

When your entire family shares one room, you have no choice other than spending time together. ?Not only that, the places we lived were far from our normal work, church, and social activities. ?Most trips were a 50-60 minute drive in one direction. ?Gas money, or lack of, was a major issue, so we typically drove one car. Every day was like a road trip. ?Some days we spent well more than half our day together, in a car.

We came together in a car. ?We came together each day and night in our one bedroom. ?We typically came together each evening at the dinner table. ?Most importantly, we came together in prayer, and we trusted God.

Obstacles Aren?t Meant to Break Your Marriage?but to Build Your Marriage.

What we went through in 2004 has shaped our family today. ?We typically eat dinner each night together. Perhaps that developed from our previous situations. ?We?ve chosen to homeschool our children which means spending practically all day together, while many parents cannot imagine the thought of not getting a ?break? from their kids. ?We?ve done it by necessity in the past, and now the choice is easy.

Ironically, as I write this we are in a very difficult time financially. ?Our income has drastically dropped. ?The home we are renting will soon not be available for us, as it is being sold. ?And if it wasn?t, I?m not sure we could afford to stay anyway. ?Many areas of our future are uncertain. ?We have been here before, and we know we can make it through?together. ?Our past experiences, although tough at the time, have been a good thing.

Your Marriage Challenges Can Be Good!

I don?t know what obstacles your marriage is facing today, but I do know you can overcome them together. Remember what you are facing is intended to strengthen you and your marriage, not destroy it. ?If you have never been there before, be encouraged by our story, and get ready to tell your story of overcoming marriage obstacles. ?It may be the story that saves another marriage similar to ours and yours.

BMWK ? ? What is the biggest obstacle you have faced in your marriage? ?Please share in the comment section below.?

Office for Mac 2011 and 2008 ancestor ready for OS X Mountain Lion, procrastinators groan

Office for Mac 2011 fade

So you updated to OS X Mountain Lion and, gosh darn it, you're not sure that Office for Mac 2011 (or Office 2008 for Mac) will be in perfect harmony. Time to put off finishing that accounts receivable spreadsheet until IT sorts it all out, right? Unfortunately for anyone looking to catch a break, Microsoft just certified that the two most recent Mac versions of Office will purr with Apple's latest big cat. About the only hiccup remaining is the inability to manually download and install future updates as long as Gatekeeper is on full lockdown. If you've been spending all day making paper planes, it's time to knuckle down and get back to work.
