Where was Hillary Clinton during Bill's DNC speech?

DILI (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sipped coffee at a bean-processing plant nearly 10,000 miles away in East Timor around the time her husband delivered a speech to the Democratic convention, but she watched a recording and said it was "great".

Clinton woke up and smelt the coffee in Asia's newest nation after an overnight flight from Beijing as former President Bill Clinton delivered a rousing nomination speech for President Barack Obama in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Hillary Clinton and Obama were rivals for the Democratic nomination in 2008 and she has been talked about as a possible candidate for the presidency in 2016.

"It's a great honor for him (Bill Clinton) to be nominating the president and I'm delighted to be here in Timor Leste (East Timor) on behalf of the United States," she told a news conference. She later said she had spoken to her husband after his speech.

"This is the first convention that I have missed in many, many years. For decades, secretaries of state have not attended political conventions because of the non-partisan nature of our foreign policy. I think it's a good rule. It's one that I certainly accepted."

She later watched a recording of the speech at the U.S. embassy and told reporters it was "great", adding that she had also spoken to her husband.

Clinton held talks with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao and President Taur Matan Ruak in the capital Dili, which is around 9,962 miles from Charlotte across the Pacific Ocean. Her visit was part of a trip to east Asia.

She also toured a USAID-funded coffee finishing plant, a symbol of the country's second-largest export which generates some $10 million per year.

Women workers in pink and purple uniforms sorted coffee beans rolling off simple conveyor belts. The plant's walls were lined with huge sacks of coffee, much of it destined for the U.S. coffee giant Starbucks, which is a major customer.

"It's delicious," Clinton said following the tour.

East Timor is one of Asia's poorest nations. It celebrated 10 years of independence from Indonesia earlier this year.

Bosnian Serbs Shrug Off Socialist International Snub :: Balkan Insight

Elvira M. Jukic

The Executive Secretary of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats, Rajko Vasic, led by the Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik, said the party will not go into mourning following its exclusion from the Socialist International several days ago.

Vasic said the party will not "veil itself in black", as the decision merely marked the continuation of a policy of discrimination against Serbs that had gone on for the past two decades.

?We will not wear black because of that,? Vasic said. ?We will go on with our political program of responding to all the needs of our citizens.?

He said that the SNSD had nurtured many other contacts in the world beyond the Socialist International which, he said, had evidently sided with Bosnia's mainly Bosniak [Muslim] Social Democratic Party, SDP.

The SDP, meanwhile, said that excluding Dodik's party reflected the fact that the SNSD had abandoned social democracy for ethnic nationalism and separatism.

?The denial of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its attempts to twist historical facts from the recent past about the [1995] Srebrenica genocide only hastened the process of the exclusion of Dodik's SNSD from the Socialist International,? the SDP said.

It added that all the other member parties supported the decision ?which illustrates the political and ideological turn of Dodik's party, causing... it to be excluded from the world family of social democrats.?

(AP) ? The only worry on Michael Strahan's mind when he made his entrance Tuesday as the new co-host of "Live!": "Don't trip," he summed up after the show.

He didn't.

When Kelly Ripa introduced him, the gap-toothed former football player jogged onto the morning show set and gathered her up in a bear hug, lifting her off her feet.

"When I was hugging Kelly, that's when I was calming down," Strahan explained.

The rest of the hour was clearly a snap for him and for Ripa, who was getting a permanent partner nine months after Regis Philbin retired from the show and after having welcomed Strahan and 58 other guests in the chair beside her.

Taking his seat on Tuesday, the former New York Giant joked that it felt "comfy, like it was molded for my body."

Strahan was relaxed, amiable and playful, and drew "ahhhs" from women in the studio audience when he presented Ripa with a dozen red roses.

"It's so nice to have a co-host literally sweep you off your feet," Ripa told viewers, "and I know that he can bench press me if he wanted to."

Maybe his arrival was fulfilling a prophecy. Ripa played a clip of Strahan's first appearance on the show in 2008, shortly after the Giants had won the Super Bowl. Philbin asked Strahan what he would want to do after retiring from football, and Strahan said that Philbin's job looked pretty good.

"I was joking," Strahan said on Tuesday, "and I'm glad the joke came true."

Strahan's hiring has been an open secret for the past two weeks. His selection was made official a couple of minutes into what, since November, had gone by the stripped-down title "Live! With Kelly" and now rechristened "Live! With Kelly and Michael."

Or rather, "live! with kelly and michael." Eyeing the brand-new all-lowercase logo during a commercial break, the co-hosts pondered whether the first letters of their names would look better capitalized.

During their breezy first "host chat," Strahan amusedly shared from a list of obnoxious pet names for women ("babe" and "sweet cheeks" among them). The pair discussed parenting policies, in particular how much money the Tooth Fairy should award for a lost tooth.

"Homeland" star Claire Danes was the first guest, followed by singer Phillip Phillips.

Then Olympic gold-medal gymnasts Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber each teamed with one of the co-hosts in a challenge on balance beams. Strahan was totally game for the stunt, which called for carrying eggs balanced on a spoon. (The two teams tied with 13 eggs apiece.)

After the broadcast, Strahan downplayed any suggestion the show would be changing much.

"I think you have two people who can laugh at themselves, who can laugh at each other, who have a good time, who get along ? and make sure that anyone who watches the show enjoys it," Strahan said. "I think it's the same formula."

The formula was cooked up by Philbin, the original host, nearly 30 years ago. Ripa joined him in 2001.

Executive producer Michael Gelman, who oversaw that transition from Kathie Lee Gifford to Ripa, was asked how Strahan emerged as the favorite in the current competition.

"Chemistry isn't something you can really put your finger on," he said. "But there was something special individually with Michael, and the chemistry was there."

Ripa, declaring that she had had "a little bit of a say" in Strahan's selection, said, "I wear my heart on my sleeve, so it's pretty obvious that I love him. So I was definitely on board."

"It seems like we've been doing it all along," she added.

In return, Strahan said Ripa has "done a great job for 11 or 12 years, and hopefully we'll do it for the next 11 or 12 years."

In the meantime, he will continue as a host of "Fox NFL Sunday," which originates from Los Angeles, where he lives. He will commute to New York to do "Live!"

How will he handle that routine?

"Get on a plane," he cracked. "Coming here during the week and doing this show, it's fun. I don't look at it as if it's a chore."

Before bringing Strahan out, Ripa joked about the lengthy search, advising people to stop sending her resumes.

"I have enjoyed every single solitary person ? except for one," she said. "The staff is laughing because they know that's true."

Asked afterward who that one spoilsport had been, she stated with a laugh, "I would never reveal the co-host I did not enjoy being with."

"But I will!" Strahan jumped in.

"He figured it out," said Ripa, offering yet more evidence of their rapport. "He watches the show and he knows my body language."

On the Move: Sydney's Boutique | Women's Lifestyle Magazine

Photograph of Kristian Grant, owner of Sydney's BoutiqueOnly ten months after opening Sydney?s Boutique, 25 year-old Kristian Grant knew it was time for a change. ?I really wanted to connect with a new client base,? Grant says of her future Eastown location, ?It will really open up Sydney?s to people who haven?t been able to see what we have yet.?? Sydney?s current location is in the heart of the inner city, though that?s done nothing to slow down the success of the boutique and it?s steady stream of loyal customers. ?I never planned on opening up a boutique this early in life, but the space kind of fell into my lap so I decided to just go with it,? explains Grant.? And it?s a good thing she did.

Sydney?s, named after Grant?s 8 year-old daughter, is known for the versatility of its separates. ?Our main goal is to have pieces that are flexible, stuff you can wear to the office and then out at night too,? says Grant, ?since not every woman has time to go home and change.? With clothes made for the woman on the go, ?the pieces work for you, not the other way around.? They cater to women of all sizes, from petite to plus-size, and to all types of budgets as well.

The boutique came to be when Kristian was searching for a Grand Rapids office for her Lansing-based nonprofit mentoring business, REEAL. When funding for the Grand Rapids REEAL office fell through, she used the already acquired space for her clothing boutique. ?I figured that everything happens for a reason,? explains Grant.

Delighting people is just one of the things that inspires Grant, and as a member of the ITT Tech Business School Committee and the City of Wyoming Community Development Committee, helping people is too.? ?I?ve always been really blessed to have really powerful women be a part of my life and set a great example,? explains Grant enthusiastically. ?My parents always made sure that I was around really strong female role models that didn?t mind putting a lot of time into me.? Her grandmother has had a particularly strong presence in her life. ?She really showed me how to work and think,? adds the entrepreneur. ?Though she only had a seventh grade education, she showed me the power of common sense and how to get things done.?

Being an entrepreneur, single mom and philanthropist sure isn?t an easy job, but someone has to do it. ?I try to include my daughter when it comes to the business, getting her opinion and also asking her about her own future goals,? explains Grant. ?I try to make sure that she is inspired, and has an understanding of everything that?s going on.? As for her philosophy about fashion and beauty? ?It?s not all about what?s on the outside. People get way too caught up on how a person looks, but if you?re not beautiful on the inside too it really doesn?t matter,? tells Grant. ?Everything I do is about trying to make the inside better, and then bring it out.? Inspiring indeed.

Sydney?s is located at 1479 Lake Drive. The Grand Opening coincides with Fashion?s Night Out on September 6th. For more information on Sydney?s Boutique, visit http://sydneysboutiquegr.com/shopsydneys/.

Chuck Norris Warns of "Thousand Years of Darkness" if Obama Reelected

Chuck Norris stars in a new ad urging citizens to unite and vote against President Obama and prevent a Doomsday scenario that would inevitably follow his reelection.

"If we look to history, our great country and freedom are under attack," the 72-year-old Expendables 2 star says in his dire appeal to Republican voters.

"We're at a tipping point and, quite possibly, our country as we know it may be lost forever if we don't change the course in which our country is headed."

With his wife by his side, he says, "I know you love your family and your freedom as much as Gena and I do, and it is because of that we can no longer sit quietly or stand on the sidelines and watch our country go the way of socialism or something worse."

Norris then borrows a quote from President Ronald Reagan in saying that if freedom isn't protected, we take "the first step into a thousand years of darkness."

Reelecting Barack Obama would represent that step, he believes.

Interestingly, Norris does not mention Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney once. He famously endorsed Mike Huckabee in 2008. See below ...

Four Degrees of Separation? | Networks

Six Four Degrees of Separation?

The small-world phenomenon is the idea that a significant portion of the world belongs in one giant component. Pop culture has adopted the term six degrees of separation as the term that encapsulates this idea. This number ?six? has stood for 50 years, ever since Milgram?s ?small world? experiment. The world now is vastly different from 50 years ago, most notably the rise of technology and electronics. Internet has in 30 years transformed the landscape of humanity, it being a giant computer network that anyone with a computer can access. Social media has also transformed our lives ? for most of us, it is our identity on the internet. But maybe, just maybe, social media also has the transcending power of ?transforming our relationship networks ? by giving us bridges of interconnections at the touch of a button.

The paper, Four Degrees of Separation, by Lars Backstrom et al. explores the world-scale social-network, Facebook. Their findings that ?the average distance? is 4.74, corresponding to 3.74 ?degrees of separation?, showing that the world is even smaller than we expected.? With a dataset of Facebook?s entire active user base (721 million nodes, 69 billion edges), this research is certainly comprehensive. Succinctly put, ?when considering another person in the world, a friend of your friend knows a friend of their friend, on average.? The researchers explicitly note that this research was conducted on a graph of individuals ? there are no ?subscriptions? or pages that people may ?like? included in the graph. Thus, an interpretation on their finding would be that it depicts the average distance of the human network, using the Facebook network as a proxy. We take note that this is slightly different from the Milgram experiments, since that experiment results in the length of a routing path, which is an upper bound for the average distance. This is because an individual sending the postcard to another does not know the shortest path, whereas this research utilizes graph algorithms (as well as a host of graph compression algorithms) to average the shortest distance between each set of two nodes for the entire network.

Novelly, this research ??reaffirms our notion of a small world, confirming existence of the giant network consisting of all the people of the world. However, I feel we have to temper our expectations somewhat. The world may not be as interconnected as this paper indicates. I maintain this position based upon the research Marlow et. al. has conducted on the strength of friendship ties on Facebook. In it, they defined three categories of friend relationships: mutual, one-way, maintained. What is striking is the relatively small size of each of these relationships. With approximately a network of 400 (corresponding to an user on Facebook with 400 friends) , maintained relationships numbers 40, one-way, 20 and reciprocal, 10. Thus, only approximately 10% of all ?friends? for a Facebook user with 400 friends can be categorized as in-touch. The rest, maybe acquaintances or distant friends. Or perhaps even enemies, as the saying ?keep your friends close, but your enemies closer? goes. Thus, this proposed ?Four Degrees of Separation? may be more diluted than we first imagine. Maybe it is only four degrees if we accept even the weakest of weak edges as a friendship relation.

A little known fact is Milgram actually offered an opposing interpretation of what ?six degrees of separation? meant. He spoke of also interpreting the results to mean we are really ??six worlds apart?. The researchers Backstrom et. al. also noticed this, making mention of the ?high degree of locality induced by various externalities, geography chief amongst them?. Then, it is perhaps humbling to know that from us, one world apart stands Asia, but it would still take a couple more worlds on top of that to reach that human connection.

Marchers lament NC union stance but support Obama

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Union activists walked a political tightrope on Monday ? voicing support for President Barack Obama's re-election bid while lamenting adversarial attitudes toward organized labor in the state Democrats chose for the presidential nominating convention.

More than 300 people marched in the Charlotte Labor Day Parade a day before the kickoff of the Democratic National Convention, carrying signs, wearing matching shirts and chanting. In contrast to a protest the previous day, the atmosphere was overwhelmingly pro-Obama, family-friendly and generally low-key. The police presence was much lighter.

For Gil Crittendon, it was important for the marchers to show that organized labor is alive in North Carolina ? even though the state has the lowest percentage of union members in the nation. The member of the National Postal Mail Handlers Union Local 305 brought his four grandchildren with him for the walk in the hot sun.

"I want them to know what it's like to stand up for your beliefs," the Charlotte resident said. "A lot of people ? politicians ? want to break the unions. It's important that we stick together and push back."

The selection of Charlotte for the convention has been a sore point with union leaders. While organized labor gave $8.3 million toward the 2008 convention in Denver that nominated Obama, many unions are refusing to financially support this week's convention for reasons including North Carolina's ban on collective bargaining for teachers and other public workers. Fundraising reports for the convention and host committee will not be released until 60 days after the convention.

It has been an uphill battle to organize unions in the South, where many people have negative attitudes toward them. Crittendon believes it has to do with workers' fears that companies will move if employees unionize. As a counter example, he cited North Carolina's textiles industry which had few unions but still saw its plants shuttered and jobs moved overseas.

"How do you think the middle class was built? With strong union wages. We fought for better working conditions. We fought for higher wages. Yet, people attack us for that," he said.

He was walking in one of the many clusters of union members wearing shirts from their locals who were interspersed with marching bands for the parade around the central business district of North Carolina's largest city.

Many carried pro-Obama signs. Danielle Rozelee was part of a group wearing light blue shirts with Obama's picture on it. She works at a Freightliner plant in Mount Holly that assembles long-haul trucks.

She credits Obama with saving the jobs for many in her industry because of the auto bailout.

"He saved our jobs. He saved our industry. We're going to save his job in November," she said, repeating the slogan on her shirt. "We support him 100 percent."

Both Obama and Vice President Joe Biden addressed union crowds Monday in the Midwest as part of an effort to keep the group of reliably Democratic voters motivated. During a gathering in Ohio, Obama noted his decision to rescue automakers General Motors and Chrysler in 2009, a move that Romney opposed.

At an appearance in Detroit, Biden said: "Ladies and gentlemen, you, organized labor, are one of the reasons why this country is coming back. Folks, let me make something clear and say it to the press: America is better off today than they left us when they left."

Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg argued that the middle class has been "crushed" by high joblessness, fallen incomes and rising gas prices under Obama.

"Americans aren't better off than they were four years ago, and they deserve a president who recognizes that," she said.

In Charlotte, about a dozen members of the Occupy Wall Street movement, who have been camping out in a city-owned park, marched in the back of the parade. They held anti-Obama signs. When they reached the end of the parade route in the park where they are staying, one of the Occupy members got into a shouting match with an Obama supporter who ended up walking away.

Phil Wheeler, 70, came to Charlotte from Connecticut to serve as a convention delegate but marched in solidarity with other union members. He wiped the sweat from his forehead a few times. It was hot and humid, but Wheeler said he was going to stay with the march.

"I know people on the left who are criticizing the president. I understand their frustration. You can't accomplish a lot when people are working against you. But do they really think they're going to be better off with Romney?" asked the retired member of United Auto Workers Local 376 in Hartford, Conn.

He said the GOP agenda would hurt working class Americans.

"For unions and working people, there's a big difference between Romney and Obama."

DHA in Vegan Diets. Is Supplementation Necessary? - Choosing Raw

IMG_2523

Greetings, all!

Hope you?ve been enjoying restful and happy holiday weekends. Mine has been very busy?tons of ?back to the grind? stuff to deal with?which is fine with me. To be honest, as nice as vacation is, it only takes me a week or so to start aching for work again. I?ll be ruing these words in a month or so, but at the moment, it feels great to be stretched thin with projects again.

On my project list for some time has been a review of a new, and super favorite, protein powder. It?s called ?True Vitality? protein powder, and it is from Green Foods. Like many protein powders on the market, it is infused with probiotics, Omega-3 fatty acids, and greens. It?s vegan and gluten free. What makes it unique is that it contains a dose of DHA from algal oil.

What is DHA, exactly? DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid (or, more precisely, all-cis-docosa-4,7,10,13,16,19-hexa-enoic acid?take that, orgo!!!) is an Omega-3 fatty acid that may play a role in fetal brain and retinal development, heart disease prevention, prevention of Alzheimer?s Disease, and even a positive role in managing ADHD. Though none of these correlations have been proven (research on DHA and human health has a long way to go), the findings suggest that DHA is at least worthy of broader study.

DHA is a hot topic for vegans, because vegan diets have historically been lower in the nutrient than omnivorous ones. The most readily available source of the nutrient is fish and fish oil. Though there is no hard evidence of health defects in vegans due to missing DHA, current thinking is that DHA supplementation is at least worthwhile. Here I?ll quote my friend Ginny Messina, R.D., who writes about DHA in her invaluable book Vegan For Life (which I consider to be a ?must read? for vegans who want solid nutrition and health information):

?Because the research on the overall benefits of Omega-3s is so conflicting, it?s hard to know whether these supplements are useful for vegans. We are not convinced that they are. On the other hand, we are not convinced that the lower blood levels of DHA and EPA in vegans is unimportant. Until we know more, we are inclined to recommend supplementing with very small amounts, around 200 to 300 mg of DHA (or DHA and EPA combined) every two or three days.

Conveniently, in the 1980s, NASA researchers discovered a means of isolating DHA without the use of fish or fish oil for astronauts on long voyages. They realized that certain species of marine algae could be used to produce supplementary DHA, and so DHA from algae is now widely available to vegans.

I?ll confess that I have not consistently supplemented DHA myself, but Ginny?s recommendation is good reason to consider it seriously. Moreover, if you are an expecting mother, it?s well worth asking your health care practitioner if a DHA supplement may be wise, as its role in brain development may be significant. We aren?t sure what role DHA plays in plant based diet, but as Ginny points out, it does seem clear that some supplementation of this nutrient can?t hurt, and may help.

For this reason, I was excited to find that True Vitality protein contains DHA from algal oil! It?s worth noting that the DHA in True Vitality protein powder is 1000 mg per serving; this is about 3-4 times what Ginny and Jack Norris recommend. That said, it?s very easy to use half a serving of the powder per smoothie or drink, or to use it only a few times weekly, rather than daily. When we find new products that boast particular nutrients, it?s tempting to glut ourselves on them, but it?s important to remember that over-supplementation can be expensive, unnecessary, and even harmful; when you get a new powder or enriched food, always check out labels to see what your intake will be!

Green Foods sent me samples of both the chocolate and vanilla flavors. Both are delicious. Unlike some vegan protein powders, they?re not sicky sweet, but they?re sweet enough that the greens and slight trace of algae can?t be detected readily.

The base of the protein is a mix of pea, rice, and hemp, which I like because it means variety. If you?re curious about details, here?s the ingredient label:

I used both flavors, often in my ?standard? smoothie mix of banana, greens, berries, almond milk, flax, and hemp seeds. The chocolate flavor worked really well in a smoothie of cherries, cacao, cacao nibs, strawberries, and greens.

Yum!

As for the price point, it?s 29.99$ for 22.7 oz of the protein; this is not cheap, but it is more affordable than other premium brands (to give you a sense of comparison, 30.4 oz of Vega is $69.99). And the company has a range of products that also includes green powders, wheatgrass, carrot essence, and beet essence. Check out the array of products on the website, here.

I?d certainly purchase this protein again, and plan to. Though I don?t consider protein powders to be an essential part of vegan diets, they can be helpful means of boosting protein intake if you happen to be an athlete, a person in ED recovery, or a person who is new to veganism and struggling with protein sourcing. They can also add a lot of density and satiety to smoothies.

I have a much more complete protein powder review in the works; if you guys have any particular questions, please comment and let me know, so that I can take them into account!

Have a wonderful evening, friends.
