Zimbabwe prime minister's wedding in doubt

HARARE, Zimbabwe ?

Attorneys for a jilted ex-lover of Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai say a court ordered him to stop his wedding to another woman on Saturday because he might face bigamy charges.

Lawyer Everson Samkange said Friday a magistrate ruled that Tsvangirai was in a customary marriage with the woman for whom he paid a bride price under Zimbabwe's tribal laws. The magistrate ruled that Tsvangirai's planned marriage Saturday to a different woman would make him a bigamist.

Tsvangirai's attorneys said they will immediately appeal to the High Court to allow Saturday's ceremony.

Earlier this week, a High Court judge ruled that the marriage between Tsvangirai and the rejected woman was not "valid" under Zimbabwe's legal system.

Top regional politicians have been invited to Saturday's lavish nuptials.

Mars rock hound: Rover Curiosity prepares to head for unique formation

The Mars rover Curiosity is about to head for?Glenelg, a unique confluence of rock formations. It's only a quarter-mile away, but the trip could take weeks as the chemistry lab on wheels examines the terrain.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / September 12, 2012

A NASA handout photo shows the three left wheels of NASA's Mars rover Curiosity combined in two images that were taken by the rover's Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) on September 9. In the distance is the lower slope of Mount Sharp.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has provided a sweeping panorama of its new home in Gale Crater, provided what one researcher calls a dog's-eye view of the rover's underside, and now aims to raise its eyes to the sky to capture the transit of the Martian moon Phobos as it swings across the sun.

All in 37 sols' work for the Mini Cooper-sized chemistry lab on wheels whose mission is to help scientists determine if this patch of the red planet has ever had an environment hospitable to life. (A sol is one day on Mars ? 40 minutes longer than on earth.)

So far, the rover has undergone one hardware test after another to ensure all of the instruments are working and the rover's seven-foot long robotic arm works as advertised. That phase comes to an end Friday evening Earth time, when the rover finally strikes out for Glenelg, a unique confluence of rock formations a quarter of a mile away, according to Jennifer Trosper, Curiosity's mission manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

If Curiosity was to make the trip without rock stops along the way it would reach Glenelg in less than two weeks.?But now that engineers are about to share the keys to the rover with the science team, researchers are eager to put tools on the science turret at the end of Curiosity's arm to use along the way.

The first object researchers are hunting for is a hefty chunk of basalt, rock born of volcanic activity and widespread on Mars. The goal is to use ChemCam, a laser-based device for imaging rocks and gathering data on its composition, and an alpha-particle x-ray spectrometer, in tandem to analyze the rock. ChemCam sits atop Curiosity's mast. In addition, the turret's stand-in for a geologist's hand lens also will be brought to bear on the rock.

Once the rover's testing phase ends Thursday, "we will drive until the science team finds that rock," Ms. Trosper says. After a few weeks at the rock, "we will continue to drive to another location, hopefully a sandy location, where we can begin to scoop."

The pause time there could run another few weeks each, she suggests.

The overall verdict on Curiosity's performance to date? "So far, outstanding," Trosper says.

One measure of the progress made in operating rovers on Mars ? from Sojourner Truth in the late 1990s to Spirit and Opportunity, and now to Curiosity ? is the amount of time consumed by days where the teams didn't meet their objectives. With Sojourner Truth, the first rover to land on Mars, one day out of three was lost to glitches of one kind or another, she says. With the long-lived rovers Spirit and Opportunity, the number fell to one day out of 10. With Curiosity, so far it's one day out of 36.

That may bode well for future rover missions. Aside from the science it performs, Curiosity also is designed to serve as a platform for future long-distance rover missions, where only the instruments change to meet a new mission's science objectives. NASA Mars program officials have said that while it's possible to envision missions that would require a rover smaller than Curiosity, they don't foresee a need for a rover larger than Curiosity.

Who's Advising Mitt Romney on Foreign Policy?

With Mitt Romney's comments on Libya drawing attention today-specifically, his criticism of Obama-it's worth examining whom Romney listens to on such matters.

Dan Senor is one of Romney's closest advisers on foreign policy. Since Paul Ryan has been selected as the GOP's vice presidential candidate, Senor has been traveling with Ryan-but today, he left the trail because of the "foreign policy developments" and is in Boston and NYC.

Senor is the former spokesman for the American government in Iraq (the Coalition Provisional Authority at the beginning of the Iraq war under George W. Bush) and is a particularly close adviser to Romney on the Middle East. (He has traveled with Romney to Israel three times, as well as written a book on Israel that Romney often cites). With Ryan, he consults on domestic and foreign policy issues.

Last month, the New York Times described Senor as an "advocate of neoconservative thinking that has sought to push presidents to the right for years on Middle East policy." Senor led a foreign policy briefing for Ryan on the plane yesterday from Seattle along with Jamie Fly, executive director, Foreign Policy Initiative and Reuel Marc Gerecht from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

Romney keeps a large group of foreign-policy advisers, eight of whom participated in the early neoconservative group Project for a New American Century think tank, founded in 1997 and headed by William Kristol, the Nation's Ari Berman reported in May. In the same month, The New York Times' Magazine's David Sanger reported on discontent within that big team, with some complaining that Romney only listens to Bolton.

Romney has long sought to distinguish himself from the president by drawing a contrast between weakness and strength, and his posture is reflected in the team he's chosen, peppered with luminaries from the Bush administration. The "special advisers"-who do not comprise the entire foreign policy team-are listed on Romney's campaign website:

Cofer Black Christopher Burnham Michael Chertoff Eliot Cohen Norm Coleman John Danilovich Paula J. Dobriansky Eric Edelman Michael Hayden Kerry Healey Kim Holmes Robert Joseph Robert Kagan John Lehman Andrew Natsios Meghan O'Sullivan Walid Phares Pierre Prosper Mitchell Reiss Daniel Senor Jim Talent Vin Weber Richard Williamson Dov Zakheim

Michael Hayden served as CIA director under president Bush, who nominated him in 2006. Michael Chertoff served as Bush's second Homeland Security secretary. Jim Talent and Norm Coleman are former Republican senators.

At least one of them presaged Romney's attack line on Libya. Richard Williamson, who served as Bush's special envoy to Sudan and ambassador to the U.N. Security Council, leveled an attack at Obama last night before it was known that Americans had been killed.

"The events in Egypt and Libya show the failure of the Egyptian and Libyan governments to uphold their obligations to keep our diplomatic missions safe and secure and the regard in which the United States is held under President Obama in these two countries," he told Foreign Policy's Josh Rogin. "It's all part of a broader scheme of the president's failure to be an effective leader for U.S. interests in the Middle East."

Michael Falcone contributed to this post.

Missouri Farm Bureau reaffirms support of Akin

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? The Missouri Farm Bureau provided a boost for Senate candidate Todd Akin on Tuesday by reaffirming its endorsement of the Republican congressman despite his remarks about women's bodies being able to avert pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape."

The Farm Bureau's support is important for Akin because its membership spans every county in the state. Akin could have lost access to that rural network had the Farm Bureau rescinded its endorsement and taken a neutral stance in the Missouri Senate race.

The organization's political action committees had voted by an overwhelming 99 percent to support Akin over Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill on Aug. 10. But in an unprecedented move for the Farm Bureau, it decided to reconsider that endorsement after Akin's remarks about rape aired Aug. 19 on a St. Louis television station.

Akin has apologized repeatedly since then and has rejected numerous calls by top Republicans ? including GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney ? to drop out of the Senate race so that the state Republican committee can pick a replacement candidate.

The Farm Bureau held a series of conference calls over the past week to poll its political action committee members about Akin. The organization requires at least a two-thirds vote to make an endorsement. The Farm Bureau did not disclose the exact percentage of support Akin won in the new vote, but it said the results were similar.

"During the conference calls, some of our members brought up the statement made by Congressman Akin last month; however, they accepted his apology and reaffirmed this election is still about issues such as moving our country in a better direction, getting the federal deficit under control, eliminating needless government regulations and creating more jobs," Blake Hurst, president of Missouri Farm Bureau, said in a written statement.

An Akin spokesman said the six-term congressman from suburban St. Louis was "very encouraged" and "very appreciative" that the Farm Bureau reaffirmed its support. The Farm Bureau president called Akin on Tuesday to personally share the news.

"That's going to be an incredible help and very important because they have a lot of networks put in place to assist us in getting to know people and letting the congressman speak to agricultural leaders in every corner" of the state, Akin spokesman Ryan Hite said.

The Missouri Farm Bureau's endorsement also can result in financial contributions to Akin, though nowhere near enough to replace the millions of dollars of advertising that National Republican Senatorial Committee and the conservative Crossroads group had planned to air in Missouri. Both entities vowed to pull their ads because of Akin's rape remarks.

Akin has instead turned to soliciting small-dollar donations over the Internet.

Since it began making U.S. Senate endorsements in 1982, the Missouri Farm Bureau has always backed the Republican candidate.

When speaking before the organization's political committees last month, McCaskill told the farmers that she didn't expect to get their endorsement because of her political affiliation. But she told them that she planned to win the election even without their help and would nonetheless represent their interests in Washington.

"As a daughter of rural Missouri, Claire has been a strong, independent voice for Missouri's farmers and agricultural communities," McCaskill spokesman Erik Dorey said Wednesday in response to the Farm Bureau's renewed endorsement of Akin.

McCaskill has highlighted her support for the federal farm bill, which includes crop insurance provisions. Akin has historically opposed the farm bill, but he told the Farm Bureau his concerns rest primarily with expansive food stamp spending that is included in the legislation.

Akin drew applause from Farm Bureau members last month when he said he would like to eliminate the federal estate tax, which can hit farms as they are passed from generation to generation. McCaskill said she wants to exempt at least the first $5 million of an estate's value from the tax and does not want to raise the current tax rate.

Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson

By Us Weekly

At 69 years old, Joy Behar should know better than to pick on a 7-year-old kid. In a Sept. 5 interview with the Huffington Post, the "View" star predicts the future is grim for "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" star Alana?Thompson, who first gained fame on the TLC reality series "Toddlers & Tiaras."?

"What's little Honey Boo Boo going to grow up to be? That's what I want to know?" Behar asks. "She's going to be a fat kid; she's going to grow up to be a big fat woman. She is, I can tell. She's just a kid, but you see the genetics are right there. She's going to have large boob boobs -- Honey Boobs Boobs."

Alana -- known for guzzling bottles of "go-go juice," a mixture of Red Bull and Mountain Dew -- has often referred to herself and her family members as "fat" on "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo." Matriarch JuneShannon is aware of the health problems facing her family, which inspired her to initiate a weekly weight loss challenge. Though their results have been varied, they haven't stopped trying.
