Three films cluster at top of North American movie box office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Police drama "End of Watch" and horror thriller "House at the End of the Street" tied for the top spot at the North American box office this weekend, with Clint Eastwood's "Trouble With the Curve" close behind.

Each of the top films brought in $13 million respectively at U.S. and Canadian box offices.

The gritty "End of Watch," written and directed by the writer of 2001 crime drama "Training Day," David Ayer, brought in $13 million at U.S. and Canadian box offices.

The opening by "End of Watch" was the largest for independent film distribution company Open Road, a 2-year-old joint venture between theater chains AMC and Regal. Its two other films this year, "Hit and Run" and "Silent House," opened with less than $7 million apiece.

Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg said "End of Watch" was successful because it appealed to a wide swath of moviegoers.

Referring to "End of Watch" as a "smart action movie," Ortenberg added that it is a prototype for the type of films Open Road hopes to make. Its next film, action ensemble "Breacher," is another David Ayer project.

"House at the End of the Street," which features Jennifer Lawrence in her first role since this year's blockbuster "The Hunger Games," also brought in $13 million.

The timing of horror thriller's release capitalized on Lawrence's "Hunger Games" fame, said Relativity president of distribution Kyle Davies. The film primarily targeted young females and did a large share of marketing through mobile-phone-based applications.

The audience for "Street" was 61 percent female, and 70 percent of filmgoers were under 25.

Baseball movie "Trouble with the Curve" was hot on the heels of the top films, taking in $12.7 million, according to box office estimates released on Sunday. The film is Clint Eastwood's first starring role in four years and comes less than a month after his headline-grabbing speech at the Republican national convention.

Rounding out the top five was the 3D re-release of "Finding Nemo" with $9.4 million, and "Resident Evil: Retribution" with $6.7 million. Both films premiered in theaters last weekend.

Futuristic action film "Dredd" disappointed with a mere $6.3 million on its debut weekend, failing to crack the top five and coming in below expectations.

Though the overall box office is down when compared to last year, a couple of independent films have performed strongly.

"The bright spots are the indie films like 'The Master' and 'The Perks of Being A Wallflower,' which are both doing terrific business in their limited runs," said Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst at Hollywood.com.

"The Master," which stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as a charismatic cult leader and has been compared to the story of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, set a new per-screen average record when it opened in limited release last week, and has garnered strong reviews.

This week, the film expanded to take in $5 million in domestic markets, bringing its total domestic gross to $6.1 million so far, and it snagged the No. 7 spot in this weekend's overall box office rankings.

Teen movie "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" starring Emma Watson scored the fourth-highest per-screen average of 2012 with its debut.

DIVIDING UP THE AUDIENCE

The close finish among the top three films was a reflection that the broad slate of new releases, which each targeted a different demographic, divided up the movie-going audience.

Warner Brothers, a unit of Time Warner, released "Trouble with the Curve." Relativity Media released "House at the End of the Street." Open Road Films, a joint venture of the AMC and Regal theater chains, released "End of Watch."

Sony Corp's movie studio released "Resident Evil: Retribution." "Dredd" was released by Lions Gate.

"The Master" was released by the Weinstein Co.

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" was released by Summit.

Military Channel's THE BROKAW FILES Reflects on Iconic Moments in History with Fresh Insight from Legendary Journalist Tom Brokaw

September 20, 2012

-- World Premiere Airs Monday, October 15 at 10 PM E/P with Six New Episodes --

(Silver Spring, Md.) Thousands of snapshots make up the composite picture of Tom Brokaw?s prolific NBC News documentaries. For more than 40 years, Brokaw has held a front-row seat to history while traveling the world to capture pivotal events like Ronald Reagan during his final days in the Oval Office; World War II veterans returning to the beaches of Normandy 40 years after D-Day; and a day in the life of young crew members aboard a nuclear aircraft carrier deployed to Afghanistan. Now, in the Military Channel?s new series THE BROKAW FILES, the legendary NBC News anchor and best-selling author revisits the most iconic moments from his award-winning broadcasts to reflect on those events, and to provide his own fresh perspectives, including personal stories he?s never shared, that place these seminal events into a modern context. Produced by NBC News? Peacock Productions, the six-episode first season of THE BROKAW FILES premieres Monday, October 15 at 10 PM E/P. Subsequent episodes will premiere Tuesdays at 10 PM.

?I am very excited to have the opportunity to present these important lessons of history on the Military Channel. They continue to inform and instruct us in ways that are at once relevant to the 21st century. It?s a privilege to be associated with such a bold initiative,? Brokaw said.

?We are really excited to have Tom Brokaw, one of the greatest broadcast journalists of our generation, join us at the Military Channel,? said Ed Hersh, SVP of Content Strategy for the Military Channel. ?THE BROKAW FILES encompasses everything we want the channel to be, with fascinating stories of the military as well as new insights into events that have shaped the modern world.?

The world premiere of THE BROKAW FILES anchors Military Channel?s ?RED HOT AND NEW WEEK? of special programming airing Monday, October 15 to Saturday, October 20. Six additional series and episodes premiering throughout the week will reveal even more missions and top-secret technologies and breathe life into the important American histories that Military Channel?s viewers crave.

Episodes of THE BROKAW FILES include:

  • Return to D-Day Premieres Monday, October 15 at 10 PM E/P
On the 60th anniversary of Normandy?s storming, Brokaw revisited the battlefield and spoke with three Americans who survived D-Day but are still dealing with the horrific memories. In this episode, Brokaw reflects on his visit to Normandy on that poignant anniversary, recalls when the WWII memorial opened in 2004, and shares his hope that the young people of today will strive to serve their country and give their best to make this nation great.
  • Ronald Reagan
In an interview conducted just two days before Reagan left office, Brokaw sat down with the beloved out-going president to reflect on his life, his accomplishments, and his vision of the future. Now, Brokaw looks back at that remarkable interview to ponder how Reagan, who some credit as being ?the architect of modern conservatism,? framed the Republican platform on which all future party candidates built their campaigns.
  • USS Stennis Aircraft Carrier
Ten years ago, Brokaw stepped on deck of the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis to learn what a day in the life is like for the 5,000-member crew aboard a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier going into war against al-Qaeda. This year, the Stennis returned home to a heroes? welcome after a 7-month deployment in Afghanistan. While thousands have come and gone in the decade in between his visits, Brokaw finds that the sense of honor, duty, camaraderie, and patriotism remains aboard.
  • The Greatest Generation
Inspired by a trip to Normandy on the 40th anniversary of D-Day, Brokaw became fascinated by the cultural shifts that occurred as WWII soldiers returned home to America to rebuild their lives and their nation before passing the torch to the next generation. Now, Brokaw reflects on the modern-day effort to document heroic and untold stories of this generation and the importance of preserving the rich history of a defining era.
  • 9/11 Air Traffic Controllers
In the chaos of 9/11, the men and women controlling the communication in the skies above America had to piece together a tragic puzzle. One year after the attacks, Brokaw sat down for an exclusive interview with these heroic air traffic controllers to discuss the events of this unimaginable attack on America?s homeland and the lessons learned. More than a decade later, Military Channel catches up with one of those controllers about how the events of 9/11 forever changed the industry and the lives of air traffic controllers.
  • The Commander in Chief
Brokaw goes behind the tour route?s velvet ropes to experience a day in the life of a U.S. president. Brokaw shadowed the Clinton White House at the one hundred-day mark of his presidency, and discussed war strategy with George W. Bush in an exclusive interview aboard Air Force One. Brokaw now discusses the legacy of these presidents as well as their vastly different approaches to life after the White House.

THE BROKAW FILES is produced exclusively for the Military Channel by NBC News? Peacock Productions with executive producer Colleen Halpin. For NBC News? Peacock Productions, Benjamin Ringe and Knute Walker are executive producers and Sharon Scott is executive in charge of production. For Military Channel, Max Culhane is executive producer, Sara Kozak is senior vice president of production, Ed Hersh is senior vice president of content strategy, and Henry Schleiff is president and general manager.

ViewSonic PJD5133

SVGA data projectors, with their relatively low 800 by 600 pixel native resolution, have become less common than their higher-res XGA (1,024 by 768) and WXGA (1,280 by 800) cousins, but they provide a lower-priced option that still offers image quality suitable for business or classroom presentations on small to mid-sized screens. As such, the ViewSonic PJD5133 provides reasonably good image quality and a solid feature set, including HDMI connectivity.

The PJD5133 is reasonably bright at a rated 2,700 lumens. Some SVGA projectors, such as the Optoma Pro160S, run as bright as 3,000 lumens, but the difference is modest, especially since perception of brightness is logarithmic (it takes a lot more than doubling a projector's rated brightness to make it appear twice as bright).

It has a decent set of connections for a portable projector, 2 VGA-in ports (which double as component video) and 1 VGA-out port; audio-in and audio-out jacks; S-video; an RCA composite video jack; a USB mini type B port for remote mouse control; and an HDMI port. A few other SVGA projectors, such as the Optoma Pro160S, have HDMI ports, but they're still relatively rare at this low a resolution.

The projector measures 9.2 by 11.2 by 3.2 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.7 pounds, which makes it quite portable, though it comes without a carrying case. ViewSonic sells a suitable case for a modest $19 direct. The lens has both zoom (1.1x) and focus wheels; both were smooth and responsive, and it was easy to bring the projector to a good focus. I found the remote control a bit finicky; it was a lot less responsive when I was to the left of the projector than in other positions, though the IR sensor is at the front of the projector.

Testing

I tested the projector from about 10 feet away from the screen. Our test image, measuring about 60 inches diagonally, stood up reasonably well in a setting with moderate ambient light.

I did our data image testing using the DisplayMate suite, at first over a VGA connection in the projector's PC color mode. Image quality was typical of an SVGA data projector, fine for basic business and classroom presentations. Colors were somewhat muted, and I noticed a slight green tinting in some grays. I tried several color modes; colors were brighter in ViewMatch (a mode designed to preserve color saturation even at high brightness) and Brightest modes, though switching to them didn't help with the tinting. Switching to an HDMI connection had little effect on image quality.

One place where SVGA projectors often suffer for their lower resolution is in displaying text, and the PJD5133 is no exception. The smallest white-on-black text was barely readable, and the next smallest size was somewhat blurred, as was the smallest black-on-white text. If you use a lot of text (and particularly small text) in presentations, a higher-res projector?such as the Epson PowerLite 93+ , an Editors' Choice XGA projector with superb text quality?would serve you better. The same is true if you want to project a really large image. But the ViewSonic is more than up to the job for workaday business presentations.

The PJD5133's video quality is suitable for short clips as part of a presentation. The main issue I encountered was the rainbow effect, a common artifact in DLP projectors in which people sensitive to the effect see little red-green-blue flashes in still or moving images, most often in bright areas against dark backgrounds. I'd noticed it in data images that tend to bring the effect out, but it was more pronounced in video, a little more apparent than is typical in a DLP data projector. People who are sensitive to it will likely be distracted by it, so it's best to stick to shorter videos with this projector.

It does have a consolation prize as a DLP projector: its 3D readiness using the DLP-Link system, although you need to get your own active shutter DLP-Link glasses. ViewSonic sells them for $109 a pair, although you can get active-shutter glasses elsewhere for considerably less. Still, they cost enough that you'd be hard pressed, say, to outfit a classroom with them.

Audio from the PJD5133's single 2-watt speaker was of decent quality but low volume, audible in a fairly small room or if you're close to the projector.

The ViewSonic PJD5133 is a respectable data projector with solid overall image quality, particularly for data. It's worth considering, along with the Optoma Pro160S and the Epson PowerLite S9 Multimedia Projector, if you're looking for a budget portable SVGA projector. For a similar price, though, the Editors' Choice Epson PowerLite 93+ offers higher (XGA) resolution and superb data and video image quality, including better text than the ViewSonic.

SpaceX, NASA target Oct. 7 launch for resupply mission to International Space Station

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? NASA managers, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) officials and international partner representatives Thursday announced Sunday, Oct. 7, as the target launch date for the first contracted cargo resupply flight to the International Space Station under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract.

International Space Station Program managers confirmed the status and readiness of the Falcon 9 rocket and its Dragon cargo spacecraft for the SpaceX CRS-1 mission, as well as the space station's readiness to receive Dragon.

Launch is scheduled for 8:34 p.m. EDT from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. A back up launch opportunity is available on Oct. 8.

The launch of the Dragon spacecraft will be the first of 12 contracted flights by SpaceX to resupply the space station and marks the second trip by a Dragon to the station, following a successful demonstration mission in May. SpaceX services under the CRS contract will restore an American capability to deliver and return significant amounts of cargo, including science experiments, to the orbiting laboratory -- a feat not achievable since the retirement of the space shuttle.

The Dragon will be filled with about 1,000 pounds of supplies. This includes critical materials to support the 166 investigations planned for the station's Expedition 33 crew, including 63 new investigations. The Dragon will return about 734 pounds of scientific materials, including results from human research, biotechnology, materials and educational experiments, as well as about 504 pounds of space station hardware.

Materials being launched on Dragon will support experiments in plant cell biology, human biotechnology and various materials technology demonstrations, among others. One experiment, called Micro 6, will examine the effects of microgravity on the opportunistic yeast Candida albicans, which is present on all humans. Another experiment, called Resist Tubule, will evaluate how microgravity affects the growth of cell walls in a plant called Arabidopsis. About 50 percent of the energy expended by terrestrial-bound plants is dedicated to structural support to overcome gravity. Understanding how the genes that control this energy expenditure operate in microgravity could have implications for future genetically modified plants and food supply. Both Micro 6 and Resist Tubule will return with the Dragon at the end of its mission.

Expedition 33 Commander Sunita Williams of NASA and Aki Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency will use a robot arm to grapple the Dragon following its rendezvous with the station on Wednesday, Oct. 10. They will attach the Dragon to the Earth-facing port of the station's Harmony module for a few weeks while crew members unload cargo and load experiment samples for return to Earth.

Dragon is scheduled to return in late October for a parachute-assisted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of southern California.

While NASA works with U.S. industry partners to develop commercial spaceflight capabilities, the agency also is developing the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System (SLS), a crew capsule and heavy-lift rocket to provide an entirely new capability for human exploration. Designed to be flexible for launching spacecraft for crew and cargo missions, SLS and Orion will expand human presence beyond low Earth orbit and enable new missions of exploration across the solar system.

Roundabout September 2012: by Devi Laskar | Book Writing World

?clay pots? by devi laskar

The writing may not be on the wall, so to speak, but it?s definitely in the air: Today?s posting is a mini-round-up of all the writing-related things that I?ve noticed recently, books recently published by authors whose works I greatly admire.

Writing consistently and forming a ?writing habit? has been difficult lately, but I?m trying to outlast my increasing desire to quit, run away and open a lemonade stand somewhere in the South Pacific.

When you have a moment, check out NPR?s Steve Inskeep?s interview with Salman Rushdie. ?Today, Rushdie is again living in the open, and he has finished a memoir about the experience, called Joseph Anton. . .an alias he created for himself when he was forced into hiding. ?The police asked me to come up with a pseudonym, partly because I needed to rent properties and so on, and obviously couldn?t do it in my own name,? he says. ?And I was asked to make it not an Indian name. And so, deprived of one nationality, I retreated into literature ? which is, you could say, my other country ? and chose this name from the first names of Conrad and Chekhov: Joseph Conrad, Anton Chekhov equals Joseph Anton.?

And then there?s one of my favorite writers, Junot Diaz, who just came out with his book, This is How You Lose Her. It took him sixteen years to write these interconnected stories about a man named Yunor who cannot remain faithful to any of his girlfriends.?Click here to read or listen to the NPR interview.

Excerpt: This Is How You Lose Her: ?I?m not a bad guy. I know how that sounds ? defensive, unscrupulous ? but it?s true. I?m like everybody else: weak, full of mistakes, but basically good. Magdalena disagrees though. She considers me a typical Dominican man: a sucio, an asshole. See, many months ago, when Magda was still my girl, when I didn?t have to be careful about almost anything, I cheated on her with this chick who had tons of eighties freestyle hair. Didn?t tell Magda about it, either. You know how it is. A smelly bone like that, better off buried in the backyard of your life. Magda only found out because homegirl wrote her a fucking letter. And the letter had details. Shit you wouldn?t even tell your boys drunk.

The thing is, that particular bit of stupidity had been over for months. Me and Magda were on an upswing. We weren?t as distant as we?d been the winter I was cheating. The freeze was over. She was coming over to my place and instead of us hanging with my knucklehead boys ? me smoking, her bored out of her skull ? we were seeing movies.?

Doesn?t this want to make you run out to the nearest bookstore and snag a copy?

For my part, I will be adding these books to my list of things I?d like to read sooner rather than much later. And Rushdie?s and Diaz?s stamina and perseverance are inspiring me to not look into what the weather?s like in Guam or Tahiti just yet?..

Devi Laskar is a founding member of the Book Writing World. She holds an MFA in creative writing from Columbia University, an M.A. in South Asian Studies from the University of Illinois, is a rabid Tar Heel basketball fan, and is working on a nonfiction piece at the moment.

ConAgra Foods reports 1Q earnings on Thursday

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Packaged food company ConAgra Foods will report on its fiscal first-quarter earnings Thursday morning.

Investors will be looking to see how well ConAgra is handling higher costs for ingredients, packaging and fuel during this quarter.

The maker of Healthy Choice, Banquet, Marie Callender's and other branded food products has had to raise prices in the past to deal with cost increases.

The Omaha-based ConAgra is one of the nation's largest food makers and its results show what the industry is facing.

ConAgra has made several acquisitions in the past year, including the $267 million deal for the Bertolli and P.F. Chang's frozen food businesses that ConAgra completed in August.
