In A Nutshell: When the captain of a submarine opts to question unconventional orders rather than fire nuclear weapons on Pakistan, a chain of events is set in motion that leads to a standoff between the ship?s crew, their country of origin and the natives of an exotic island.

Names You?ll Know: Andre Braugher (HOMICIDE) brings an air of gravitas (tinged with just a soupcon of crazy) as the renegade captain, Marcus, and Scott Speedman (who will forever be Ben to FELICITY fans like us!) plays First Officer, Sam.

What They Say: Creator/Executive Producer Shawn Ryan (THE SHIELD, TERRIERS) calls RESORT a ?big budget, very huge, monstrous-scope show.? He adds that it is ?not a show about war but? a show about people in a time of crisis. So in the same way that Casablanca and Gone With the Wind? were personal character stories about people in the middle of crisis, that?s what we?re hoping to do in a weekly series.?

What Others Say: James Poniewozik of Time.com wrote of the first episode, ?This is how a pilot should work.?

What We Say: This may be the bravest, most intriguing, thought-provoking show of the fall season. The action kicks off fast and furious? which is both a good and bad thing as we?re introduced to a literal boatload of characters and their issues in no time. And yet the second Braugher begins bucking the system, you?ll be fully invested as the tension ratchets higher and higher. If there?s a phrase to describe this show, it?s unrelentingly macho? which is rather refreshing. If there?s a concern, it?s with regard to the time slot. Will viewers really tune in for such heavy material at 8 p.m. on a Thursday night?

Harman showsoff its upcomming JBL docks and speakers, we go eyeson

Harman announced a fair amount of JBL-branded speakers back at IFA, but that wasn't all it had to announce before the year goes out. Today we met with in the company in NYC, where it was ready to show off even more of its upcoming wireless and dock speakers. In fact, don't tell Harmon than the 30-pin connector is on its way out, as its $199 OnBeat Venue (seen above and $139 OnBeat aWake are ready to pair up with your last-gen iOS devices. The Venue is rated for a peak output of 30-watts and features a stow-away dock a tweeter and woofer combo for both stereo channels, component outputs for use with TVs, an obligatory 3.5mm jack and Bluetooth if you'd prefer to go wireless. The aWake shrinks things down to about 13 watts, and features a digital clock so that you can use it on your bedside night stand -- despite its small size, it'll easily dock an iPad. Both systems also work with free JBL apps for iOS that'll enhance the experience. According to the company, it's also working on solutions for the Lightning connector, but wouldn't reveal any hard details.

Moving along to dedicated speakers, you might recall the SoundFly BT, which recently got outed during its trip to the FCC. The 20-watt Bluetooth-equipped unit is strictly intended to plug directly into wall outlets, having only a status light with no inputs or buttons. It'll set you back $149 when it hits shelves, and if you tack another another $50 you can get an AirPlay-equipped version instead. We gave the BT a quick listen and it sounded surprisingly big with a fair amount of bass extension -- impressive considering it's petite and it plug-friendly design. A Harmon rep even noted that the hotel we were in was interested in procuring some for its rooms. Sadly, the units aren't remotely water-resistant, even though our demo area was a bathroom.

Lastly, we're actually most intrigued by the $59 Harman / Kardon BTA 10 dongle. The nearly matchbook-sized box connects to any speaker via its 3.5mm jack, allowing you to stream over Bluetooth 4.0 on the fly. Power is supplied via a micro-USB cable, and a blue indicator light lets you know that it's powered up. Harmon's mainly created it to add Bluetooth functionality to its non-wireless speakers, but it can be used with any speaker of your choice. We're also told that it overs very high-quality, despite being Bluetooth, thanks to some in-house development dubbed as TrueStream. There's no exact word on when all of these units will hit shelves, but you can peek the galleries for better looks -- check the source link for full details.

Poll: How Do You React to a Region Locked Console? | GamePolitics

Let?s say there?s a new console coming out that you?ve totally got your eye on.? It?s a groovy piece of kit, it?s reasonably priced and it?s got a bunch of games you want to play.? You?ve got your money saved up and you?re just ticking off the calendar days until its launch.

And then you find out it?s region locked.

What now?? Do you buy the console anyway and resign yourself to the fact that you won?t be importing any games you otherwise would have bought in a heartbeat?? Do you mod your console so that it will play import games?? Do you even care about import games in the first place?

Maybe region locking is such a deal breaker that you flat-out refuse to buy the console.? Or maybe you?re hardcore and will import an additional console to play a different territory?s games.

Such is the subject of this week?s poll, folks.? Keep in mind, I?m not necessarily referring to the Wii U.? Maybe you?re a Sony gamer through and through and are waiting on pins and needles for the PlayStation 4.? How would you react if it turns out the PS4 is region locked?

Vote in the poll and let us know.? Write spiffy comments in the ever so appropriately named ?Comments? section.? Send us email at SuperPACPodcast@gmail.com.? Make sure you finish your homework before you play video games into the wee small hours of the morning.? Brush your teeth before you finally go to bed.? Did you remember to let the dog out?? Maybe that?s why there?s a puddle by the back door.

Sorry.? Where was I?

Oh yes.? We?ll discuss the poll results and your comments on the next week?s Super Podcast Action Committee and so get cracking!? The poll closes sometime this weekend.? Tick tock, tick tock?

(AP) ? The countdown is on for skydiver Felix Baumgartner.

In just two weeks, Baumgartner will attempt to go supersonic when he jumps from a record altitude of 23 miles over New Mexico. Project managers announced Tuesday the feat will take place Oct. 8.

The Austrian parachutist jumped from 13 miles in March and 18 miles in July. This time, he hopes to break the all-time record of 19.5 miles set in 1960.

A giant helium balloon will hoist a pressurized capsule with Baumgartner inside, dressed in a pressure suit.

Baumgartner expects to reach a top speed of 690 mph and break the sound barrier with only his body, less than a half-minute after he hops from his capsule.

The same capsule was used for Baumgartner's two practice jumps but was damaged in the latest touchdown. It smashed down hard despite its parachute, and the outer shell had to be replaced with parts from a backup capsule. The entire craft was taken apart and reassembled.

The repairs and retesting pushed the final flight from August to October.

"I feel like a tiger in a cage waiting to get out," Baumgartner, 43, said in a statement.

Project officials note that excellent weather will be needed to launch the 30 million-cubic-foot helium balloon from Roswell. Early fall is generally an optimal time for such endeavors.

The entire flight will be monitored by a NASA-like Mission Control; the mission is known as Red Bull Stratos, short for stratosphere. One of the lead team members is record-holder Joe Kittinger, who was an Air Force captain when he took part in the military high-jump project.

This time, the effort is privately funded by the energy drink maker.

Europe must take "deep breath" and enact reforms: Merkel

BERLIN (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that Europe could only hope to come out of its crisis stronger and compete in a globalised world if its members pressed ahead with painful reforms and moved to more responsible budget policies.

Speaking at a meeting of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), Merkel acknowledged that Germany was "not an island" that could disconnect from economic developments in Europe and the world economy.

But she placed the onus on Berlin's struggling euro zone partners to fix their own economies, rejecting the idea that Germany should relax its own productivity drive in order to help its partners.

"We need to take a deep breath to overcome this crisis," Merkel said. "We must make the efforts that will allow Europe to come out of this crisis stronger than it went in."

"There is a lack of confidence on financial markets that some euro zone states can pay back their debts in the long term," she continued. "The world wonders how competitive euro zone countries are."

The German leader said tough reforms in southern Europe had led to some convergence of unit labor costs across the euro zone, but made clear that there was still work to do.

She also expressed regret that the European Court of Justice had not been given stronger powers to intervene in national budget policies in the euro zone.

"We can't have support without controls. The two go hand in hand," Merkel said.

The German economy has held up well during the crisis, with unemployment holding near post-reunification lows. But there are signs that economic weakness across much of Europe and a slowdown in Chinese growth are beginning to bite.

Business sentiment is at its weakest level since early 2010, data released by the Ifo economic think tank showed on Monday. And some economists believe Germany could fall into a technical recession in the second half of this year.

"NOT AN ISLAND"

"We are feeling that Germany is not an island. We are an export nation. Forty percent of our exports go to the euro zone, 60 percent to the European Union. We can't disconnect from European and global economic developments," Merkel said.

Merkel held up the fiscal compact for budget discipline and plans to introduce pan-European banking supervision as signs of Europe's progress.

She dismissed the notion that Berlin was slamming on the brakes in the creation of a European banking watchdog. In recent weeks, the German government has made clear that it sees a January deadline for putting this in place as unrealistic.

"We want stronger European banking supervision," she said.

Merkel was due to meet European Central Bank President Mario Draghi on Tuesday afternoon. Later he will give a speech to the same industry conference.

Draghi's plan, unveiled at the start of the month, to buy the bonds of struggling euro countries, combined with a green light from Germany's Constitutional Court for Europe's new rescue fund have been welcomed by markets.

But worries have grown in the past week over Spain's reluctance to seek a bailout that would allow it to profit from the ECB's bond plan. Also weighing on the euro on Tuesday was a report that lawyers at the German Bundesbank were looking into the legality of Draghi's bond scheme.

(AP) ? A deadly shootout last week along Israel's border with Egypt has shined a spotlight on Israel's only mixed female and male combat unit, granting some recognition to a group that has faced much skepticism and often been the butt of jokes since its inception.

The Caracal battalion's response to the militant attack on Friday ? which left three gunmen dead, including one whom Israeli officials said was killed by a female soldier ? marked a major test for the unit that typically handles tame operations. One Israeli soldier also was killed.

On Sunday, Israeli newspapers and radio broadcasts glowed over the news that the co-ed battalion played a decisive role in thwarting the assailants' attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu boasted about the work of the unit ? named after a medium-sized cat native to the Middle East and Africa ? in his weekly Cabinet meeting. Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz traveled to the scene of the attack and congratulated the soldiers.

"If the Caracal force wasn't there in those critical moments, it's clear to everyone that we could have faced a difficult attack," Col. Guy Biton, the commander of the Sagi Brigade that oversees the battalion, told the Maariv daily newspaper.

Most Jewish Israeli citizens are drafted into their nation's defense forces when they turn 18. Women, however, typically serve less time than men and usually away from the battlefield, in administrative or technical positions. A minority serve in combat roles.

By contrast, 60 percent of Caracal's soldiers are women.

Women were barred from combat until 2000, the year Caracal was introduced as a way to ease females into combat duty. The unit was positioned in areas along Israel's borders with Jordan and Egypt. For years, the territory was calm, largely because Israel has peace deals with both neighbors. Soldiers who were there mostly worked to prevent drug and weapons' smuggling and while they were trained to neutralize an armed threat, they rarely faced one.

But in the last year and a half, since the fall of longtime Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak, Caracal's usual patrolling area near Egypt has become a hotbed of militant activity. Egypt's vast Sinai peninsula is home to Islamic extremists who have staged attacks against Egyptian and Israeli targets. The Jordanian border has remained quiet.

In the most recent attack, a shootout on the Israel-Egypt border left one Israeli soldier and three assailants dead. The military said the militants were heavily armed and wearing explosive belts when they crossed into Israeli territory and opened fire on soldiers guarding a team of workers who were building a border fence meant to protect against just such attacks.

An Israeli forces spokeswoman said the troops quickly returned fire, killing the militants and preventing a major attack ? a coup for the women and men of Caracal. The battalion fought on Friday alongside soldiers from Israel's Artillery Corps. In line with its policy not to discuss troop deployment, the military declined to provide the battalion's size.

"I feel proud to know that finally people are coming to recognize and know what we are worth and what we are able to do," Amit Epstein, a former Caracal company commander, told Israel Radio.

The recognition comes to Caracal after years of challenges. Resolving logistical issues like building separate sleeping quarters and bathrooms were a first hurdle. But the unit has continued to grapple with widespread skepticism from a male-dominated military.

The female soldiers' ability to fight alongside men has been questioned. But the battalion's men also have been stigmatized, written off as too weak to be accepted into a regular, all-male unit. Skeptics have also wondered how focused young men and women can be when working so closely with the opposite sex.

And the praise that followed Friday's incident was marred by a report Monday that one of the female Caracal soldiers chose to duck for cover rather than return fire during the border attack.

Israel Radio quoted the soldier as saying: "I didn't have a chance against them," referring to the militants. The soldier was not named in line with military policy.

Nonetheless, Doron Almog, who served as the head of Israel's southern command when the battalion was formed, was not surprised by the successful effort. He said the group is prepared for such attacks and expects it to continue to be called on for such dangerous operations.

And as the border with Egypt becomes increasingly volatile, Caracal will be able to continue to prove itself, he said.

"The best public relations strategy is to have a successful operation and to come and show results," said Almog.
