Who here is a Todd McFarlane fan?

I don't expect this to get a lot of attention, as I've had terrible luck with Interest Checks in the past. Here goes nothing.

As you could guess, this circles around a particular anti-hero created by the awesome mind of Todd McFarlane, the ever bad-ass:

I was tossing this idea back and fourth for a while now, seeing as I've been thinking of a biblical rp. After re-watching the HBO animated series, I finally found what I wanted to rp about. I'm also curious how many fans are here on RPGateway, and if there would actually be any interest about such a story. I do have one issue that I need help with, but the rest of the story is all set. I just can't decide if this should be about good ol' Al Simmons or the newer face in the limelight, Jim Downing. If anyone here is familiar with the Jim Downing era of Spawn, please contact me as I am really not familiar with him as the new Spawn.

But I suppose I should give a taste of the story, shouldn't I? It focuses around our main man, Spawn, who upon his own initiative dove into Hell itself and stole something of such great value to it's denizens, that all of the flaming pit has been writhing and reeling in total anarchy over it's absence. Hell's desire to have this item back is so great, that they would bring about a new Armageddon in their efforts to reclaim it. Soul's of men who've made deals with the demon lord Malbogia have begun returning to Earth, some by being released during the turmoil, others by grand design. All lost, all confused. Regardless, Hell had one order for them: Retrieve that which was stolen, and kill Spawn. However, whether or not you follow those orders is up to you, the consequences will be paid either way.

And what is that item, you ask? Well, you'll have to read the story......

A selection of beings are available to play as.

-Hellspawn
-Demons
-Angels
-Humans
-and Bountyhunters

This is based on the comics of Spawn, and does take certain bits from the movie as well, though mainly the comics. this is in no relation to that god-awful abomination: The Adventures of Spawn. This is an adult rp, with tons of gore, violence, cursing, etc etc. Basically humanity at it's worse, and then what Hell wants it to be. Also, it's alright if your not familiar with the comics, but I'd advice at least watching the animated series on youtube. I will provide a link via PM but not openly over this forum, and I warn you that it is very adult.

I'd really like to see what kind of fan-base is still around and on this site, so post or pm if you have an interest!

James Bond Skyfalling For Heineken | Brookston Beer Bulletin

007-1
Okay, we?ve been inundated with ads lately, so you probably know that the new James Bond film Skyfall opens today, at least in the U.S. I?ve been a huge James Bond fan since I saw my first one in the theater, which was Thunderball, when I was six. I read all the books, and needless to say, saw every film multiple times. I?ve really been enjoying the reboot with Daniel Craig and will be taking my son Porter to see Skyfall this afternoon. This will be his first Bond film in the theater, though he?s seen a couple of them on DVD. I?m looking forward not just to seeing the movie, but in some ways I?m even more excited that he?s really jazzed to see it and has been talking of little else for the last week. There?s just one tiny problem.

james-bond-skyfall-daniel-craig

Heineken has been associated with the Bond franchise for some time now, but the $45 million deal for Skyfall also requires Bond to actually drink some. Now drinking beer is fine, even for Bond, of course. He styles himself as a hedonist, a man who enjoys the finest pleasures across the board. He soliloquizes on that very subject in the pages of the novel Casino Royale. Especially re-set or rebooted here in the present, where beer is every bit the equal of wine and spirits, you?d not only be unsurprised that Bond drinks beer, you?d be downright shocked if he didn?t. If you read the books, you?d know he?s never restricted himself to martinis but usually drinks the preferred alcohol wherever he happens to be, and has enjoyed beer in several of the novels.

I took a detailed look at this six years ago, when it was rumored that Bond would drink Heineken in Casino Royale ? which turned out not to be the case ? but which caused all manner of odd denunciations that the character would never stoop so low as to drink that swill reserved for the Hoi polloi. I don?t mean Heineken, I mean beer in general. Journalists, who could have done a little research, just went apeshit. Check out James Bond?s Beer. I?ll wait here.

So as you can see, beer and Bond have been together for quite some time now, just not in the way the media has portrayed it, as usual taking the propaganda and marketing given them at face value and regurgitating it without doing any fact-checking or wondering at how convenient it all seemed. Watching the first Bond film, Dr. No, with my son last weekend, I again noted that in Jamaica he?s talking with Quarrel at a bar and Red Stripe can be seen behind the bar. A few minutes later, fighting in the back room of the bar, Bond is pushed over onto a pile of empty Red Stripe cartons that go flying everywhere. Why they?re empty is a bit of a mystery, but the fact is although he never drinks any, there?s been beer front and center since the very first official film. In the novel, The Man with the Golden Gun, he finally manages to drink some Red Stripe. In fact, he drinks three of them waiting for someone in a cafe.

But in Skyfall apparently he?s seen drinking a Heineken from the bottle, while in bed with co-star Tonia Sotiropoulou. MGM has circulated the still below showing just that.

Skyfall

Here was a portion of my take on Heineken and James Bond from six years ago:

Propaganda aside, I?m certainly in favor of James Bond drinking beer. If they?re trying to re-invent (or reboot) James Bond ? which is my understanding of what the new film represents ? it makes sense that a modern Bond would have embraced good beer along with the other pleasures of life today. That would be in keeping with the character?s philosophy. Undoubtedly one of the reasons that Bond was not a beer drinker in 1953 and beyond, when Fleming began writing the Bond novels, was that there were not many good beers widely available worldwide and what was available was not often written about. Remember Michael Jackson?s first beer book wasn?t published until 1977. And American wines were held in no better regard during that time period, either. So keeping Bond?s tastes and preferences rooted in a time fifty years ago, when the diversity and quality of alcohol beverages was vastly different than it is today, doesn?t make sense anymore, if indeed it ever did.

But Heineken? Not Heineken. Bond?s character would never drink such swill. He wouldn?t be a snob about wine, food, clothes, cars and practically everything else and then drink such a pedestrian beer. In fact, in the novel Casino Royale, in Chapter 8, just after ordering champagne, Bond makes the following pronouncement:

?You must forgive me,? he said. ?I take a ridiculous pleasure in what I eat and drink. It comes partly from being a bachelor, but mostly from a habit of taking a lot of trouble over details. It?s very pernickety and old-maidish really, but then when I?m working I generally have to eat my meals alone and it makes them more interesting when one takes trouble.?

So there is absolutely no way someone who would say that would turn around and order a skunked green-bottle of Heineken. Maybe a Thomas Hardy 1968, a Samuel Adams Utopias, a Deus, or a Cantillon Rose de Gambrinus. He?d more likely order something showy, expensive and impressive; something that showed he had good taste. And that would never be a Heineken. Often Bond orders local specialties in the novels and films, and Casino Royale takes place in northern France. The fictional resort town where most of the novel takes place is supposedly near the mouth of the Somme River in the Picardie region, which is only about two hours from Belgium. So while France is not known for its beers, a good selection of Belgian beers would likely be available at the casino and area restaurants. That?s what a beer savvy Bond would order.

To which today I would only add that he?d never, ever drink it out of the bottle! Well, maybe not never, but if he had the choice, he?d do it the proper way, out of a glass because his character is all about knowing what?s the right way to do things and then taking a particular pleasure in doing them correctly. And what self-respecting English gentleman ? or for that matter any Brit ? would drink Dutch lager over his native ale, especially when his job was protecting the British way of life? It?s unseemly.

To take unseemly a few notches further, Refined Guy reported that Heineken USA will release two special metal bottles of Heineken using James Bond imagery. Known as ?Star Bottles, on the plus side, at least the beer won?t get skunked as easily as in the green glass bottles.

heineken-bond-2012

According to the website Bond Lifestyle, Heineken pulled out all the stops for the Amsterdam premiere of the film, with an obscene amount of product placement for the event. And I?m not alone in believing this tie-in is not the best idea, at least the way it?s being done, with many, many pundits weighing in across the globe. But I think an Australian commentator, Lucy Clark, summed it up best in B&T, when she said. ?In the golden era, products were chosen because they fitted with the character. The sad thing is that, in the modern era, the character and plot is decided by sponsors.?

So while I?m really looking forward to seeing the film today ? and hoping this will be one of those father/son moments that Porter remembers long after I?m gone (as it is for me) ? what I hope above all else is that seeing that out-of-character Heineken won?t break the fourth wall for me and make it harder to immerse myself in the experience and just enjoy it. Fingers crossed.

Middle-aged women tackle 13.1 miles : Outdoors & Recreation ...

By JULIANA A. TORRES

LARGO ? The women of FAB 50 are embracing their age and the community empowerment that comes from pushing each other past their own physical and mental limits.

About 70 women will tackle the Lady Speed Stick Women?s Half Marathon in St. Petersburg on Nov. 18, many of them running a half marathon for the very first time.

The group has met at Walsingham Park every Sunday for 26 weeks, transforming their bodies from ?couch potato? to a long distance runner, ready to conquer 13.1 miles.

?It has been probably one of the best experiences of my life,? said soon-to-be half-marathoner Sandi Cornett. ?There are so many people involved, and everybody is so tremendously supportive. It?s all about helping each other.?

Coach Pamela Paul of Largo had no idea what she was onto when she gathered the first FAB 50 Women on the Run more than a year and a half ago. In fact, the group began as an answer to Paul?s own half-marathon struggles.

Paul was turning 49 on the weekend of the Women?s Half Marathon in 2010. Though she had trained women to run 5K and 10K races, Paul decided to start challenging herself to longer distances, prompted by her own advancing years.

However, the weekend of the race did not turn out well.

?It was just a really rough run for me because I was emotionally dealing with the fallout from a shattered dream, and I was starting to go through menopause,? she said.

During the entire trying race, Paul said she kept coming back to the same thought: ?I don?t want to be here at the same time next year when I turn 50.?

So she shifted gears. Six months prior to the 2011 race, she sent out a challenge: in exchange for joining with her in the race, Paul would provide free 26-week training to any woman who committed to running the 13.1 miles. The pseudo birthday invitation circulated among friends of friends and on Facebook.

?I had 24 women sign up, most of whom I didn?t even know,? Paul said.

What happened at the conclusion of the challenge surprised her.

?These women were telling me, ?My life has been changed. Thank you so much,? ? Paul said. ?The impact it had on their life was incredible.?

She repeated the program for the Clearwater Athleta Iron Girl in April, this time charging participants at least enough to cover the specialty drinks she provided for them. When it came time to train for another Women?s Half Marathon this year, 76 women were signed up to participate.

?We?re just having too much fun,? Paul admitted. ?It?s mostly us middle-aged women (who think) ?You got to be kidding me, I can?t do a half marathon,? before they know it, they?re running long distances, and they?re achieving milestones that they?ve never achieved in their life.?

That certainly has been the case for 55-year-old Largo resident Mary Bronk. When she was in her 20s, Bronk would run three to five miles a day as well as the occasional short race. But after a divorce, she became a single mother to three young children and her ability to run was limited. As a nurse, she understood the importance of preventive care, so she became an avid walker.

?Then, as I got older I just thought I could never do it,? Bronk said. ?I never thought in my 50s that I would be running a half marathon.?

Now she?s back to thinking like a runner, reading running magazines and oogling over sneakers and running shorts in sports stores.

?I do tell Pam that it?s a blessing how she has brought this back into my life,? Bronk said. ?I?ve already achieved goals that I never thought I would.?

Despite her previous running habits, Bronk had never run a half marathon before, or many of the longer distances she?s already checked off.

Recently, the FAB 50 tried out a portion of the actual Women?s Half Marathon course in downtown St. Petersburg for a nine-mile ?dress rehearsal? run on Oct. 13. For Bronk, who had just injured her hip in an unrelated incident involving her overeager puppy, that morning was especially hard.

?I didn?t think I was going to make it because I was having sciatic pain down my left leg. And actually I was almost dragging my leg at the end,? she remembered.

Paul kept telling her that she didn?t have to continue if it hurt that bad.

?I said, ?No. I?m doing it. I said I was going to do it. I?m doing it.? Because I just felt that if I didn?t do, if I gave myself one excuse, then I?d give myself another excuse,? Bronk said.

It wasn?t pretty. FAB 50 runners that usually never catch up with her pace asked her what was wrong as they ran past. But Bronk finished the nine miles.

?It?s not going to stop once I have this marathon behind me,? she said. ?I want to continue as much as my body will let me.?

Cornett, 54, of St. Petersburg said she felt the same way about continuing to run in races. Already, she and her 61-year-old running partner Darlene Schilling are planning to run in two other half marathons in January and February.

Cornett said that after discovering FAB 50 on YouTube ?almost by accident? she was inspired to join because many of the runners looked like ?just regular people.? It didn?t take long to get hooked.

?Even in the heat of July and August and September, I really looked forward to attending the group runs,? she said.

The running schedules were not difficult to follow, Cornett explained. Aside from the Saturday runs, FAB 50 trainees have to find time for only two other runs and a recovery walk each week.

Along with being a physical trainer, Paul is a psychotherapist and taking a last course in a doctoral program for holistic nutrition. Running isn?t the best way to lose weight, which is why she?s studying ways to add holistic nutrition to the FAB 50 training package. But running is a mood alleviator and de-stressor. Some of her psychotherapy clients join the FAB 50 and discover they don?t need therapy anymore.

?It?s been awesome for me to experience the change that this brings about in their life. That?s what my work is all about and has been about,? she said.

More than a running group, FAB 50 has taken on a life of its own as a community, with members exchanging ideas, interacting within a Facebook group and providing different support for each other, even without Paul?s involvement.

Now, only days away from her first half marathon, Cornett said she has a bit of nervous anticipation, but overall feels good about where training has brought her.

?The confidence that you gain from knowing that you can go out there and do it is so great,? she said.

And while the FAB 50 coach already has some half-marathon notches on her belt, she insists that FAB 50 has changed her life.

?It gave me a new direction ? erased all that I had experienced,? Paul said. ?It burst new life into me.?

The next FAB 50 training is called the Iron Girl baker?s dozen, a 13-week accelerated program for those who can already run a 5K run. It starts Jan. 12 and will prepare participants to run the Iron Girl half marathon in April.

Refi Rates Tuscaloosa AL - Tuscaloosa Real Estate

Getting a mortgage refinance has seldom looked more attractive than it does this October. Ads for seemingly ridiculously low teaser rates are popping up all over the place ? and even if the closing costs are hefty (many aren?t), the underlying rates make them all but irresistible.

But do you qualify?? Some folks don?t realize that a refi can be just as tough as getting a mortgage in Tuscaloosa in the first place. Or tougher. One client has a stunning property, top credit, and a guaranteed income stream that was more than adequate to fund the refi. She put together all the required paperwork, hosted an inspection (the inspector told her, ?this is the finest property in the area?), and then waited a week before being told she had failed to qualify. Why? Because her place had a guesthouse ? and that particular loan program was for single dwelling properties only!

The lesson here is that it pays to ask all sorts of questions before actually applying for a specific refinance offer; in other words, kick the tires! Nevertheless, when all is said and done, locking in lower monthly payments can still be worth the trouble.

You will want to present a solid picture ? one that shows that you are financially stable with a good credit rating. Getting any kind of a mortgage in Tuscaloosa is twice as hard if there are significant issues in your credit report or instability in your employment history.

Of course, the basic math has to work, too. The more income you have, the more the lender will be willing to lend. If you are married, you can opt to borrow as a couple so that your joint income is considered. Since the lender will factor in your debt load, subtract your monthly from your income number: if the remainder is healthy, the lender will see that, too.

Lastly (and of key importance), your home will need to appraise for the loan you desire. Although a resurgence in property values seems firmly underway, some neighborhoods have had time to show those rising values, and some not. I can help you get an idea of how the ?comps? in your part of Tuscaloosa have been faring recently ? good to know when you are getting a mortgage or refinancing an existing one.

The bottom line?? Getting any type of mortgage in Tuscaloosa requires all the usual suspects.? Reliability and predictability are really the key here.?? If you are tempted by today?s record rates to try to refinance, contact a reputable mortgage broker to go over your options.? As always, please consider me your local real estate resource ? call me if you need an introduction!

More Smartphone Users Turning to Mobile for Health Info [SURVEY]

Quick, look at your smartphone and count how many of your apps are health-related. A new survey on Mobile Health from the Pew Internet & American Life Project finds 19% of smartphone users have at least one health app downloaded onto their device.

Perhaps you use a fitness app like MyFitnessPal or a calorie counter such as Lose It! Or maybe you just use your phone to gather health data and look up info on headache remedies or caregivers.

If so, you?re among a growing trend, according to Pew Associate Director Susannah Fox, who authored the report. It found one in three cell phone owners have used their phone to look for health information. That?s up from 17% which is what a similar survey taken two years found.

SEE ALSO: Store All Your Fitness and Health Stats in This One App

Why the uptick? With 45% of U.S. adults now owning a smartphone, people don?t have to wait to get a question answered. Your internet-connected phone has become a mobile information device; a personal appliance that people have with them all the time.

Fox likens it to the transition we experienced in 2002 and 2003 when dial-up gave way to Broadband connectivity in the home. It made it easier to find health care, among other important information. The same transition is happening now with the prevalence of smartphones. ?You had to go find the Internet,? Fox tells Mashable, ?whereas now the Internet is with you wherever you are.?

What are we searching for? Many of the 52% of smartphone users who gather health information on their phones look for topics like caring for a loved one, or to find answers when facing a medical crisis.

SEE ALSO: Digitally Connected Scale Sends Your Apps the Naked Truth

Others say they use apps when they?re looking to, or have made, a make a significant health change in their lives. Exercise, diet and weight apps top the list. Mashable has written numerous stories on the availability of apps for this market but, given how popular it?s becoming, it looks like there?s room for growth.

Smartphone users reach for health apps to track their exercise (38%), monitor their diet (31%), and manage their weight (12%), according to the nationwide survey of 3,014 adults living in the U.S. Others use health apps to monitor blood pressure, diabetes, and even track their menstrual cycle.

Texting is starting to come into play in mobile health care. While an estimated 80% of cellphone users send and receive text messages, 9% are getting text updates about health or medical issues. Fox says it?s often in the form of a reminder. For example, a melanoma survivor might be more likely to remember to use sunscreen if the message comes via text, along with the daily weather outlook.

Do you use a mobile app to search for health info or track your fitness? Let us know in the comments.

Crocodile Jaws More Sensitive Than Human Fingertips

Teeny-tiny bumps on the jawlines of alligators and crocodiles are more sensitive than human fingertips, new research finds.

The reptiles' sensitive "gently smiling jaws" (to quote Lewis Carroll) may enable them to both carry their offspring in the mouths with great gentleness and to snap at prey in a split second, researchers report today in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

"As soon as they feel something touch, they snap at it," study researcher Ken Catania, a biologist at Vanderbilt University, said in a statement.

Catania was curious as to why crocs and gators sport tiny, dome-like bumps on their faces. These microscopic structures can help conservationists tell farmed reptile skin from that of endangered poached species used to make purses, shoes and belts. But no one knew exactly what the bumps were for.? [Which Is Which: Alligators vs. Crocodiles]

Catania and his graduate student Duncan Leitch used a scanning electron microscope to get an ultra-close look at the bumps' structure in American alligators and Nile crocodiles, revealing sensitive nerve endings capable of detecting vibration and pressure. They then traced these nerve endings to their source, finding that they arise from the trigeminal nerve that protrudes directly from the skull. (Humans have a version of the trigeminal nerve, too, which enables facial sensations and carries the motor impulses we need for biting, chewing and swallowing.)

Next, the researchers turned to the function of this nerve network. Previous researchers had suggested the facial bumps might detect levels of salt in the water, so the scientists tried exposing Nile crocs to salt water while measuring for electrical signals in the nerves. They found nothing. But a touch sensitivity test, conducted by touching one of the sensory bumps with a tiny hair, revealed the bumps to be more sensitive than human fingertips.

The researchers found that crocs and gators can snap their jaws shut around prey within 50 milliseconds, a reaction time likely enabled by their super-sensitive skin. But these giant reptiles can be gentle, too, cradling their offspring in their mouths to carry them from place to place.

The researchers are now interested in learning more about what regions in the brain these facial nerves stimulate.

"Crocodilians are not an ancestor to humans, but they are an important branch that allows us to fill in key parts of the evolutionary puzzle for how sensory maps in the forebrain have evolved," Catania said.

iFred Announces Kristin Brooks Hope Center is Winner of Field for ...

iFred Announces Kristin Brooks Hope Center is Winner of Field for HopeThe other week, one of our nonprofit partners, The International Foundation for Research and Education (iFred) announced the winner of their Field for Hope content ? the Kristin Brooks Hope Center. The Kristin Brooks Hope Center was the first to organize a national suicide helpline in 1998.

It has since moved on to other important projects in suicide awareness, prevention and education, including the announcement of YES-IMALIVE ? 877-YOUTHLINE. This is ?the first teen to teen peer counseling hotline to be launched in the US in the last 20 years.? They also run the IMALIVE.org virtual crisis center and 13 national programs that make up the National Hopeline Network.

iFred?s goal for its ?Field for Hope? campaign was to plant one million sunflowers around the world in fields of Liberia, Kenya, Nepal, Australia, Germany and the United States to open up discussions about depression in a positive way.

Why fields of sunflowers? According to iFred:

Each Sunflower serves as a symbol of light and hope for the 350 million people living with the treatable disease. This unique movement captured the attention of leaders, activists and media from around the world who are working to raise awareness, combat the effects of depression on individuals, communities and nations and use messaging and imagery to offer a positive message of hope around mental illness.

iFred?s leadership in helping spread depression awareness was recognized by the Founder and President of the Kristin Brooks Hope Center, Reese Butler, who said the new funds helped make their new crisis center happen:

?Not only did the Field for Hope campaign stand as a symbol of possibility for those living depression, but it helped our facility launch the next phase of our growth, expansion and outreach,? said Butler.

?The Field for Hope campaign opened new doors for us in connecting us with teachers, the Boy Scouts and other supporters, helping us launch our anti-bullying campaign, furthering our veterans outreach program and, overall, building upon our core mission. It is a great honor to be part of the work of iFred?s international campaign, helping people here in Maryland and around the world find assistance, resources, and treatment for depression especially in times of crisis.?

Since the suicide of his wife Kristin in April 1998, Butler has been on a personal crusade ? to offer hope and the option to live to those in the deepest emotional pain.

The Kristin Brooks Hope Center raised $10,000 during the campaign, which was matched by iFred.

It is estimated that 1 in 5 teens are suffering in silence with their depression around the world. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in this age group.

Our congratulations and thanks go out to these nonprofit organizations who are working tirelessly to help shed light on depression, and providing crisis resources for those in need. (The IMAlive online crisis center is here.)

Gun Maker Stocks Rise On Obama Reelection

While some Americans on Wednesday were popping champagne to celebrate President Barack Obama's reelection, others were in sporting goods stores buying guns.

"People are hedging their bets on what they think is the worst case scenario, which is that Obama will ban some guns completely," said Steve Fincher, a sales manager at Guns & Gear in Lavonia, Ga. The store has seen an uptick in sales since the summer, particularly of handguns with bigger magazine capacities, according to Fincher. "They're making sure they will still be able to get them," he said.

On Wednesday, gun maker Smith & Wesson's stock rose 9.62 percent, a jump analysts said was due to a predicted increase in sales following Tuesday's election. Stock in Sturm Ruger & Co., another gun manufacturer, was also up, rising 6.81 percent in Wednesday trading.

?We expect that with President Obama?s reelection these sales could continue well into his second term,? Mike Greene, an analyst at Benchmark Co., wrote in a research note, reported by Bloomberg.

The idea that politics influence gun sales is nothing new. In the last few months of 2008 and the beginning of 2009, the number of pre-purchase background checks recorded by the FBI increased 29.3 percent, primarily because people were anxious about the possibility of Obama introducing new legislation restricting gun ownership.

Still, three gun stores around Dallas contacted Wednesday said their customers aren't worried about the possibility of new gun laws. In fact, according to gun control advocates, Obama has been soft on the issue since taking office.

But during the second debate, the president mentioned he was considering reinstating a ban on military assault weapons put in place under former President Bill Clinton and left to expire in 2004 under George W. Bush.

"People are talking about that comment," Fincher said. "At the same time, when you're talking about stocking up, the 'preppers' cover every scenario. They're prepping for the economy to collapse, the power grid to go down, for a meteor to hit. I've even got someone prepping for the polarity change, when the north and south poles switch."

"Those people make up about 4 to 5 percent of customers," said Fincher. "But most people are struggling with a bad economy. They're buying lower end stuff. They don't have a lot of cash for expensive items."

The retired Stephan Bonnar suspended one year for PED usage

Stephan Bonnar announced his retirement last week, but soon after, it was announced he tested positive for performance enhancing drugs for his loss to Anderson Silva. Dave Herman tested positive for marijuana metabolites for his UFC 153 loss to Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera.

Because the fights were held in Brazil, which has no regulatory commission, the fights were overseen by UFC vice president of regulatory affairs. He suspended Bonnar for a year, while Herman's punishment will be decided later this week and will involve some sort of treatment.

OK, but what's the point of such a suspension at this point? This was Bonnar's second time testing positive. The $5,000 fine and nine-month suspension he received last time didn't deter him from taking banned substances again. Now, he has to serve a suspension while retired. How does this stop him from using again if he does come back -- as so many fighters do -- or keep other fighters from using?

For Herman, Ratner did say marijuana is treated differently than performance enhancers:

"We feel very strongly that there's a big difference between PED's [performance-enhancing drugs] and marijuana," Ratner said to MMA Fighting. "We think the commissions do a good job with PEDs, but we think with marijuana there should be some form of rehab involved, going through that kind of process and learning about it.

Considering two states changed their laws on marijuana on Tuesday, it's not surprising to see the UFC has a more lax attitude about the drug.

But performance enhancers can not just change the outcome of a fight. They can seriously injure a fighter, both for the one taking it and for the unwitting opponent. When a fighter blows weight, he or she quite often has to give up part of his or her purse. That money goes to the opponent. However, take a PED, and the opponent gets nothing?

Merely suspending a retired fighter and not punishing with a substantial fine is not enough for the UFC to stop future usage.
